Bad Starter???
« on: August 03, 2006, 10:14:30 AM »
Hello All,

Just bought my 88 Samurai a couple weeks ago and have started it 30-40 times with
no problem, but now two times in a row it does zippo when I turn it over??  The first time it happened I was cranking it and then stopped, tried to crank it again and nothing?  It cranked hard the first time so battery is ok, so I'm thinking its a starter going bad?

Could it be anything else?  Also I really want to change it myself to learn more about
my Samurai.  Who makes the best Repair Manual out there for Suzuki's???

Thanks for all of your help.

T

If you turn the key and don't get
a click, you have a sticky selonoid

That is exactly what is happening.  Nothing.  No click, no noise, just silence.  So
what can you do about a sticky solinoid???

And I go out today and it fires right up...........  frustrating.

Other than being a pain, if youpull the starter,
you can clean and light oil, OR replace the selonoid
with another, I swapped mine with a Metro unit, I
was having a clicky starter, but the selonoid was
bad and not making contact.

Metro starters are different, they might fit a Sammy,
but they don't fit a SideKick/ 1.6L engine

I got a used one from the wrecking yard, pick a Metro
with low miles, it will work for a while, Carry a spare
if you wheel and have an auto trans, no starter means
no go with an auto

My starter did that twice a few weeks ago and has been fine since.  When it happend to me I banged on the starter with whatever I had handy.  The odd thing is that it hasn't happed since then.  Everytime I go somewhere I wonder if it will start.

Yep, Check the wires make sure there tight, give it a bang or two, if it continues you can replace the Noid or have a small engine repair shop do it, costed my 30.00 when I was to lazy.
