longer struts for XL7?
« on: August 06, 2006, 12:04:04 PM »
I installed 1" coil spacers from Digger and had the darndest time putting the front strut back on... had to jack up both the A-arm and rotor to get the strut to reach at maximum extension.  finally got it back on, and with the tire on and the vehicle back on the ground it looks ok, but this concerns me that the strut won't have much extension left.

are there longer struts available for the XL7 to alleviate this?  I also thought about the upper strut mount flip, but then what does that do to the strut brace that goes across the engine bay?

The only struts that I know of are OME's which are about 1" longer  as for the strut mount flip thats only for kicks not GV's or XL-7's.  There was some else makeing a kit for the GV that had a spacer for the strut mount. Or you could  get a strut extenedor (spelling??)

thanks, I'll have to research the OME's... I imagine you ran into the same problem only worse?  any info on where to get a strut extender, I presume that just makes the upper shaft longer?

I'm hopefully going to bigger tires soon so I'm thinking that will push the a-arm angle back up an inch or more; we'll see

Bigger tires won't affect the suspension angles.  Tires are just fixed to your suspension, they don't affect the geometry of it except as a weight during movement.

BDS sells the extenders.  You can find a local distributor through their website:
www.BDS-Suspension.com
The part number is FSE3.  That should get you a pair, not one single extender.  Cost me about $45 delivered.  There's a bit about them on my CarDomain site:

hey THANKS! looks like that's what I need, I can't find them on their website though?  I tried searching for FSE3, BDSFSE3, BDS-FSE3 ... where did you order them from?

(edit) nvm I found them on boondoxmotorsports.com, a bit more expensive but I had some $ to spend in my Paypal account

and thanks for your informative cardomain site I hadn't seen that before!

while I'm at it, any tricks to replacing the tie rod end boots?  one of mine was weeping watery-looking grease I think I should go ahead and replace them since they're 5 years old

I'd just replace the tie rod end(s).

hmm now you're talking real money... probably around $100 for both ends
the rods are in good shape, this vehicle was never taken offroad by its previous owner
I may try the poly boots from Energy Suspension and see how they fit

is hand-tight good enough for these strut extenders?  it fits well, I applied threadlock and screwed it down as far as it'll go

I managed to tear the rubber insert in one of the strut mounts too.  someday this adventure will end!
