Check Engine Light And The Little Switch In The Dash

My check engine light on my 16V kick has been on for a couple of months and I went to check DTC codes and did just like petroworks and my chiltons told me but the light would not flash so I new of the switch under the dash so I flicked the switch and then it showed me the code # 12 means system ok. and now when I start it the light is off. If I flick the switch back the light comes on and no more codes. What does the switch do and is bad to leave swithed wit no light what is the proper position for it . If you know please let me know thanks....

One more question can I just leave the switch so the light is off or should I just leave it on.

You should leave it off. It comes on at scheduled intervals just as a reminder for service.

With it off will the light go back on at the next service interval or will just stay off.

The light will come back on at the next interval, or if there is an error set in the ECM. If the light is on because of an error code, you won't be able to turn it off with the switch.
