Does anyone own a sidekick/vitara diesel
« on: August 19, 2006, 11:37:29 PM »
I have heard that in the mid 1990s the sidekick/vitara came with either pugeot 1.9 liter diesel(in europe) or a mazda 2 litre diesel(in australia). I was just wondering if anyone on this forum knows anything about them or owns one ;D
Runnin' it stock with 225/75R15s and an unmodified 8valve TBI motor (I need a doug thoroley header and a cam) (more power) (1.6 liters of madness) (vroom + sewing machine sounds)

We had both models in the UK, early models were japanese built and used the 2ltr turbo diesel Mazda engines. Later models are Spansih built (Santana) and use the 1.9TD Peugout  engine. AFAIK in the UK the 2ltr was only offered in the LWB 'Sport' chassis while the 1.9 was available in the van version. In Europe the 1.9 was also avaliable in the swb models and in the Samurai.

i have a '99 GV 2'0 td -Mazda engine. yes, the engine also came in the LVB vitara. '95 and up (i think)

the only drawback is that it only has 87hp.

-however, a phone call to a Diesel chiptuner and a K&N filter later you got approx. 110hp ;D

i got my chip from http://www.dte-systems.com/english.html

I RECOMMEND IT STRONGLY!! it pays for it self :)
-MORE HP's ;)
-MORE MPGs ;D

while researching diesel engines for my toyota, I got in contact with a guy that imports 'half-cuts' (full front clips) from Japan. I asked about the 1.9TD in the Vitatas, he never heard of them but said if they have them in Japan he could probally get them. They are not a high demand export so I would imagine the price would be reasonable

The van variant was only sold in the UK between 2000 and 2002, it was the last of the old shape Vitaras, the softop and estate version was discontinued in 2000. The 1.9TD was only 74bhp.

Thats cool. I might look into getting a halfcut imported from japan to convert mine to diesel ;D. I have always liked diesels more than gasoline engines, but here in the usa, the only options for diesel things are 20 year old diesels from japan and europe(which I like but most are worn out) vw diesels, and the big 3 trucks(ford chevy dodge) that are way too large and problematic and expensive for my liking. I like vw diesels, but they only seem to come in front wheel drive. I think that having the tracker converted(doing the conversion myself)to a diesel would be very enjoyable. It would probably get better fuel economy, have better low end power for off road, and make more power all around because it is a larger engine than the 1.6 8 valve gasoline that it came with.

do the vw diesel swap. there are tons of them around and easy to get parts for. i personaly would like to go down to my local auto parts store and be able to get parts, and not have to wait for something to be imported.

i think the vw swap makes a lot of sense if you live in the US.

the vw engines are good and it's easy to get parts :)

a good part supplyer is alwats importiant.

here in Norway it's not easy to get licence plates on cars who doesn't hawe the right engine.

there are 4-5 LWB sammies in Norway witch has original Peugeot Diesel engines,
but trye to put in a vw engine ??? NO WAY...

when you are allowed to do it, i dont see why not ;)
