89 and 91 ECM the same???
« on: August 28, 2006, 10:52:32 AM »
I have a tired 89 1.6 8v fuel injection installed in my Samurai Tin Top and I want to install a fresh (114000 miles) 91 1.6 8v.  Question is:  Is the wiring the same for the fuel injection?  Will the 89 ecm work with the 91 or will I have to put the 91's ecm in.

ECU's are not the same, but the new engine
can use the old intake manifold, or swap the
sensors for the coolant and intake air temp

Should work just fine, the manifolds are just
about identical, you might check the thermostat
on the new engine to see if it's 180*

The old ECU might not like the the 192* thermostat
that comes in some of the later model Track/Kicks

Thanks wildgoody.
Correction....It is a 92 1.6, 8v.  If I understand this right, I can use the 89 intake manifold and not swap the coolant and intake air temp?  So I'm just using the engine of the 92 and keeping everything else the way I have it with the 89?

Yes, you can do that, if the intake is on the 92
engine, I would just swap the sensors, takes
10 min and no need for gaskets or pasable
intake leaks

I thought I'd already posted this follow-up question, but did not see it posted.  I must of did something wrong.
Anyhow, I have the whole sidekick, therefore I have all the parts.  (will be selling parts off of it soon)  What/where are the sensors?  If I use the intake that is on the 92, will I need the 92 ECM?  Could I use the 89 intake and it's ECM?  Or am I just making this to compliated?

I don't know if the wiring harness is the same
exactly, so, you could try the new engine and
the new computer, see if it works and runs right.
For all I know it might not even start, or use the
89 ECU and change the sensors over from the 89
manifold, the sensors are in the intake manifold,
air and coolant are close together, look for a Bosch
type of connector, not a single wire, computer sensors
use 2 or more wires, the single wire sensor at the
front of the manifold is the temp guage.

The computer sensors are on the side of the manifold

Good Luck
