i was reading a manual on how to reset it. theres the plug under the hood tha`t you are suposed to "short out" so that the cheeck engin light comes on. found what i thought was the plug(where is everyone elses. the one i tried is near the barreri on the passengery side) but no matter what 2 hols i tried otu of the 4 none seemed to work?!? and the bulb is in there because when i turn the car on it turns on liek it is suposed to. nay suggestions?

If you are trying to time car. There are two plugs in the same area. the one with the rubber cap on it is the one to retard timing. I think with the tab facing up the bottom left and bottom middle slots should retard timing. I dont think this will turn engine lite on ,or mabye it does (never looked)

My plug is a 6 pin and is located behind the (US) passenger side headlight, usually there is a mauve/yellow wire going to it. I forget the other colours. The pics below should help:

I've got 91 tracker and had a similar issue.  My uncle at the local college got me a print out.  It is the four wire plug just by the battery, I think one of the wires is black/grey stripe.  I'll check my paper work and get back to you.

I think the plug is white and the other is black ,use the white one and if you turn your key to on,not start,just on, your check engine light should flash a code 12 3 times. This is a way to check your trouble codes.
 
 I think you use the same one to time your engine too?
but ive been wrong before.

To fix the ignition timing short the bottom pins.

I got a print out from a local college automotive computer system.  It is for 91 tracker.  Probably the same for many others:
  -Run engine until it reaches operating temp
  -shut off
  -jumper wire(short piece of wire stripped at both ends) between black and blue/red wire
   located in diagnostic four wire plug just infront of the battery, by the fusable links. 
  -Insert jumper
  -Turn key to ignition for 5 sec
  -Start engine
  -Perform Timing check
  -Shut off and remove jumper.
