faulty speedometer
« on: September 10, 2006, 02:02:16 AM »
My speedometer jumps all around. I want to disconnect it until I have the time/money to fix the problem.
Does anyone know which wires to disconnect? (grand vitara 2004).
by the way, I checked the VSS sensor, and it's OK.

You should be able to just disconnect the connector at the sensor in the Trans.
Tie wrap it off so it doesn't get snagged on anything. You do know that your engine uses the sensor to control shift points for the trans.,if you have a automatic. Will also set a trouble code in the ECM.
Hmm....let me rethink...you can also disconnect the center harness connector on the back of the speedo
cluster, but again there are other wires in that connector that the ECM might need to work correctly?

That's why I asked for the exact speedometer wires, I don't want to upset the ECU.

Ok,heres what i have for the 2001 models, you will have to check your connector to see if its still the same color. Pin#8 on G11 connector blue/yellow wire. The biggest connector on the cluster is the G11- 16 wires.

Thank's, I found a blue/yellow wire in one connector on the back the display panel.
Disconnecting it will stop the speedometer without upseting the ECM?
Where does the ECM gets it's input? I thought it's fed through the speedometr/odometer.

This is a tough question because the vehicle is so new and aftermarket service manuals don't cover it.

One way you might be able to find the answer is by going to the Suzuki Pit Stop page (http://www.suzukipitstop.com/home/vehicleInfo.asp and subscribe to the online version of the 2004 GV FSM.   For $29.00, you get 30 days access to the manual.

...and yes, if you do a search for fsm at Ack's FAQ, you also get that link!

Thanks, I cut the blue/yellow wire and it really did the trick: the speedometer  disconnected.
Yesterday  I finally fixed the speedometer and re-connected it,  but the odometer shows the distance at the time  it was disconnected .
I thought that the ECU stores the actual distance the car traveled and the odometer is only for display?
Anyway, how do I extract the actual odometer value from the ECU , and update the odometer display?

If its possible then I expect it will be a main dealer task, it certainly won't be DIY.
