Loud knock when turning left
« on: September 11, 2006, 07:08:57 PM »
When I turn left and give it some gas there is a loud knock in the front. Does this sound like anything any one has had with before.

Need more info.  Like in 4wd, hubs locked,  more than one "knock sound"  only when turning to the left and how hard of a turn.

My car does that. Its my ex girlfriend in the trunk. Ever seen "Goodfellas"? Yeah, I didn't do a good enough job either I guess.

If there is any rotational movement of the CV axle shafts up front when this is happening (hubs being locked would cause this), it is possible that the left CV joint is failing.

If either boot is ripped, dirt may have entered the joint and is eating up stuff.

Three solutions:

I.
Get a good-looking unit at a salvage yard (a Pick-n-Pull yard is usually cheaper) and a rebuild kit from an auto parts store ($15-20).  There is an article at Ack's FAQ (see my signature) by yours truly that shows you how to disassemble and rebuild one.  Do a search for cv. I'ts pretty easy to do once you get the unit off the truck.  The driver's side is easier to remove, BTW  ;D

A Chiltons' or maybe a Haynes (in a pinch especially if you needed kindling for a fire later) manual would work to help describe how to actually remove and install the axle.  I like the Total Car Care Import Trucks and SUVs 2-CD set over the paperback manuals.  Look for part # C3050 at your local auto parts store or on amazon.com.  You can get a 30-day subscription to late-model Suzuki FSMs (Hey a Tracker is a rebadged Sidekick...) for $29.95 by going to  http://www.suzukipitstop.com/home/vehicleInfo.asp .

II.
Buy a new/remanufactured unit at the auto parts store and get greasy installing it...

III.
Visit Mr. GoodWrench.  Or one of his Bassboat-owning cousins  ;D  You may be forced to contribute a payment towards that bassboat's loan as part of the deal..

Choice #1 would be my favorite, but that's just me....

Hope this helps!

mine did this only on right turns, it was my tires catching my springs, in a sammi of course.

Hey Ack could it still be cv's if it is not in 4wd with the hubs in unlocked and i get the noise when turing right to.  Hit a couple of curbs straight on and it makes the sound to like a hammer hitting the frame.  I will find out when it breaks.
