Front Housing Question?
« on: January 24, 2005, 01:51:24 PM »
I have the chance to buy a front housing out of a XLT and had a few questions. Its an auto and the place I`m buying it says its 5:12 ring and pinion, is this true? I`m getting the housing, third member, axle shafts and hubs for $500.  Does that sound fair? And I was wondering if it would bolt right in or is there going to be a problem with mounting the third member? If so could I still use it? Any info would help alot. Thanks.

I think your trying to find one out of a GV that has a 5 spd, That wil make it a steel unit.
I don't know about the XL-7s 3rd.
Gear wise, I don't think they used the 5:12 in the GV cause they had the V-6s.
I'm sure someone more in the know will chime in. ;D

Yes I think the GV XL-7 did use the 5.13...  Or so it said on Car-parts.com   $500 for XL-7 stuff is a steep investment.  I've been shopping and it sounds in the range, but I myself will hold out and spend my $500 elsewhere.

I'm still not up to speed on the XL-7's air operated diff.  I understand that it is a disengauge unit but not quite sure how the pieces fit in place and how this effects the housing.

I thought the XL-7 front in a Kick would be set up with a Non Air operated 26 spline diff (modified Sammy maybe) and use 26 spline kick shafts...  (I recall some one saying XL-7's were longer).

Still to many unknowns for me.  A steel housing is a necessity, but for $500 and having the Diff, CV Shafts, and Hubs that I might not use.  The Extra pieces are only a benifit if you are goint to use them or sell them.

500 bucks
I thought that  was good :-/
All wrecking yards in my nieghborhood uses the same price guide (it's not used, its Original Equipment so stick it to them!)
But it was an Emergancy buy, I broke the stock one.

Is this even a Suzuki trim level (XLT)? Are we talking about a XL-7 or a TrackVit? I thought XLT was a Chevy Tracker trim level. Just asking :-*.

I'm assuming it's all steel front end...

Lets see:

Anvil:  $589.95
New Steal Third member:  $250
Set up of R&P if you can't do it your self:  $200
Possiable replacement shafts:  $150
Hubs:  Not sure lets say $40

Total:  $1229.95

And if the shafts are longer how much longer?  Could a widend front end fix this problem?

It sounds like a good price to me.  Unless anyone can give you a better price?  I check the junk yards for a steal carrier and there wasn't any.  Or if they did it was as a full assembly like your getting and that was around an $800 + price tag.  And thats with out the CV's and hubs.

I ended up having to drive an hour (one way)to order a new carrier, and then another hour to pick it up 2 months latter.  They were back ordered last summer.  Then it was closer to $300 after taxes.  Also I went with the Anvil, who at the time was $500.  So I still have $800 in the front end and that doesn't count the ARB or the R&P (5.83 = $300)  After those two little options that equals:  $1700!!!

WOW!  Who says zuks are cheap?

New Steal Third member:  $250

If you have to pay $250 to steal a third member, why don't you shell out another $20 and BUY a new STEEL one?

(Yes, do you see that this is humor?)

Ok here's some Sarcastic funny   ;)  ...

Hope no one finds it ofensive but in reality it is no far off from true.

Lets see:

Anvil:  $589.95
Sammy rear steel 3rd,  Free (got 5 or 6 here laying around)  Aftermarket4x4.com  would probally sell used ones cheap if you are looking for a set.
Set up of R&P if you can't do it your self:  I can....  FREE
Possiable replacement shafts:  Swap out the 26 spline stuff with my 1998 Daily driver (Free)
Hubs:  Same Daily Driver swap (free)
Add   $11.05  For fabbing up a New pinion to cross memeber mount for the Sammy third.
Total:  $600  + shipping of the Anvil

OR

If I can fab up some factory style mounts to a modified steel Sammy or Kick rear housing up front with the necessary Drivers side shaft suppor bearing...

If I make that jump I should be able to do it all for less the $100....   Still don't see enough reasone to make it happen until I can fab up or buy some shafts.   I'm not comfortable with the stock 26 spline stuff locked up front with 35's

But the down side is being a junk man and having piles O crap laying every where....

Aint web wheelin fun...  it's amazing how cheap you can build it in your head online....   But it is backing it all up on the trails that makes it count.

Is it Feb yet,  I need my next Rock star fix...

the trim is LXT and its a tracker. Prob V6 auto and it will be all alum. so no good to you! I just looked at one locally. plus I think they had 4.30:1 gears or something like that.
1991 4 door kick, 2" coil spacers, 30" Coopers, winch, locker, rust, dents, etc.

Steel not Steal  :P  :P  :P  I get it!

What I'm running is the same as a lot of people, aside from the ARB (wich is around $600, so give or take what your will).

Like most people here, I don't have a junkyard to go through, and with work and family I don't have the time to drive 20 miles and go through the one's around hear to look for what I might need.  Or posible deals.

Plus, I've done a lot of "This should be a cheap project because I have most of the materials"  and they don't ever end up being as cheep as I thought.

I talked to the yard again they said its a 2003 XL-7 Vitara, with 5:13 gears (auto). They also said its steel. I`m going to take a magnet when I go look at it.
