track/kick/vit millage per tank??
« on: September 18, 2006, 10:57:10 AM »
Wello guys, basically, i've recently started to think my 8valve vit/kick is draining me of fuel farrrr more than it should. I love driving it, but its eating my wallet!!

I get about 160 miles per tank. My fuel guage has now eventually packed up, so it'd be scary to run it any longer before a re-fill! I also have a speed limit of 35mph all over the island i live on. So i drive up to about 60mph on a regular basis :P, and offroad 20% of the time. Whether this makes much difference...??

So...

How many miles do you in yours??

What can i do to make it any better?

(i already have just installed a complete calmini exhaust/de-cat pipe, with normal air intake, but this hasnt changed the efficiencey)

I got 28-30 (usually 29+) mpg in my '96 1.6 liter with stock tires, then an *indicated* 25 with 235/75 Dueler M/T tires (so probably more like 27 actual).

I got 26+ in my 03 swb with the 2.0 on stock tires, then right around 25 (actual) with the same 235's.

Now I've got the 2.7 v6 running in the 03 swb, through the stock 2.0 4-cyl's exhaust, and I'm getting 21-23 mpg on stock tires.  Hopefully that'll improve some when I uncork it with a more reasonable exhaust setup.  Then, of course, I'll give it right back again with taller tires..

mpg! theres a good way to measure, i completely missed it out.

Am i right in thinking a usa gallon is ~ 3.7lts and a uk one ~4.5lts? Whcih means some of your replies will be a fair bit different to mine.... am i working this out correctly too?

a full tank costs me £21, at about 0.53p a litre...
so 21.00 / 0.53 = 39.6 (size of my tank? 40lts i guess)
39.6lts / 4.5 = gallons? = 8.8
mileage 160 / 8.8 = MPG ( tell me if my working out is wrong!)

MPG = 18.8

Thats CRAP! surely!?

Is there anything simple i can do to increase this?
Also with my fuel guage not 100% working, how big is a tracker fuel tank?
Would driving under 40mph lower my MPG ? could just be down to this...

driving under mph will almost ALWAYS lower gas mileage

faster you go, more gas you burn

estimated MPG on all vehicles is based on strict adherance to speed limits

1991 Tracker, 1.6, 8v, 30" tires, stock gears (5 speed).  i get about 30mpg (US) when cruising the freeway at 62 mph indicated.  this is actually closer to 66 mph or so.   i go 300+ miles everyother weekend and can do it on one tank.   if my math is close, that's about 110kph and about 500 klicks per  tank.  ;D

Since i installed the new exhaust and replaced the 02 sensor, my 2 dr 8v kick is getting about 22 mpg measured with 31'' swampers, so im guessing that works out to about 24ish mpg.

I got 29.7 today, and that is with it running wierd :P. I have found that I get my best mileage when I am above 4000 feet elevation.
Runnin' it stock with 225/75R15s and an unmodified 8valve TBI motor (I need a doug thoroley header and a cam) (more power) (1.6 liters of madness) (vroom + sewing machine sounds)

This is very true, 'they' get less miles per gallon. Also their tanks are bigger too, a Vitara has a 9.2 gallon tank.

nope, never changed any of this since i've owned it for the last year. Would replacing these with new bits improve it?

thanks for the replies so far... very helpful :)

I picked a new O2 sensor from eBay for £6, NOS from a dealer. I've seen them advertise them a few times. Its best to replace the O2 sensor last, if the engines a bit out of tune its possible to damage the sensor.

The first thing I do to a vehicle that is underporforming is the plugs, wires, cap and rotor.  Usually fixes it as well.  Had a friends Zuki get to the point where it wouldn't do over 40 because half the plug wires were shorting out...

I usually get around 28-30mpg on a stock 96 2 door Tracker with the 16v after I make up for the difference in tire sizes.
