Newbie wheel bearing question
« on: September 20, 2006, 05:59:19 PM »
Hi all, this is my first post...

I recently inherited an 88 Samurai with 154000 miles on it, and I’m trying to get her back on the road. While replacing the brake rotors I noticed a lot of play in the left front wheel bearing, it feels pretty smooth but there is a lot of wiggle so I’m figuring it needs to be repacked and adjusted or replaced.

I’ve worked on wheel bearings on a number of 2WD cars with no problems but the locking hub on this 4X4 scares me. I’m trying to track down a shop manual but in the meantime I could use a little help. I did a search on this excellent forum and found a bunch of threads concerning wheel bearing replacement but none specifically address my basic question… how do I take the locking hub off?

If I remove the bolts from the outer ring (closest to the wheel) will the hub come off as an assembly? Or do I need to remove the cap and disassemble the hub to get to the wheel bearings? If the hub does come off in one piece do I then just line up some splines to reinstall it?

Sorry for the seriously noob questions, this is my first 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Any help would be appreciated

Mark the hubs two parts with a pen and pull the small bolts first then open it up pull the snap ring off then pull the rest of the hub off and look for a 2" socket or 50mm, not too hard.

Here is a procedure for rebuilding the knuckles, but it should have everything you'll need in it.
