High Rpm needed to shift on Auto Sidekick. Transmission?

Ok, ill try to explain this the best I can

my friend has a 94 sidekick auto 4x4 that has recently been giving her problems

we live on a hill and she literally has to floor it to make it up (which isnt normal)

from a stop at the bottom going up it revs high... REALLY HIGH... before it seems to shift

(watching the tach it shifts past 5k which is about double normal)

then it does the same thing as it goes into 3rd

there is 80k on the engine, full tune up within the last 2 yrs
and I think it started doing this the last few months so Im thinking its the transmission

any help would be great!Ã‚Â

well there's a kickdown cable from the throttle to the tranny which can be adjusted and affects when the tranny downshifts

maybe check the vacuum modulator, or the hose going to it. that could cause symptoms like that, if you have a shop manual it can tell you how to check it,

Im just going by memory here, but i believe it is located behind the trans oil pan on the passenger side. the hose going into it should just pull out, and then it unscrews from the trans.

to check it, i believe that all you have to do is turn it upside down and see if any oil comes out the end that you just took the hose off of, and also check the diaphram with a vacuum guage.

dont quote me on this, cause im just going by memory of what i read(about 4 months ago) in my shop manual for my 92.

I had similar symptoms (not quite as bad) on my 92 auto and had to replace the modulator valve. I had someone else do the work, but it took no time. I bought a new one at one of the chain auto parts stores for around $20, if I remember correctly. Its been a few years. Actually, mine was probably close to the same mileage as hers too!

where is the modulator valve?
