Too Rich
« on: September 21, 2006, 05:48:13 PM »
I got a 86 Samuri a couple of weeks ago-camo color and all! Anyway it runs really rich like the float is too high or for some reason is getting too much gas. It's stock except for the exhaust which just goes through the muffler and is dumped in front of the rear wheel. The exhaust is smokey blue  and the back seat riders get gassed out.  Put in a new air filter and I checked all the vaccum lines and they are good. I also checked the timing and put it right on 10 degrees advance.   Plugs on 1 and 2 were a nice gray and 3 and 4 had a little oil but not bad. I did a compression check and they were all around 150 and when I added oil they went up to 165. I know it burns some oil, but I can live with that, the main problem is the gas smell. The choke and high idle work great.  This critter starts right up without a problem, and seems to have plenty of power.

Do I need to rebuilt the carb or could it be a problem with something else? I hope somebody has a answer to help me out cause this thing sure is fun to drive around.

Thanks in Advance
Bob

I'm guessing there's a problem with the carb but regardless, the exhaust needs to be extended past the rear wheel.  Fumes will get sucked right into the back with it where it is now, even if it wasn't running rich.

    Congrats on the Sami!!

Thanks
I did find the fuel window on the carb, the fuel is right in the middle-is this where it should be? The haynes manual didn't say anything about it. I also read about a idle mixture screw but where? I took the wife for a ride today, the dirt roads were ok but she got a little nervous on the 4-lane. I don't know how fast because one of the things that doesn't work is the speedo. I can't wait to get it down on the river but I need to put in a rear pinion seal. My 1/2 impact wouldn't take it so I'm going to get a friends 3/4 impact, that should get it off!
Thanks

ya with it running at idle look at the front fuel window, if you cant tell were the gas level is.  Take a needle nose clamp off the gas line going into carb as you stare at the window.  If the level starts coming down, your float is probally stuck open.

There are a couple easy things you can try my carb was like this when I bought it and I got it unstuck until she finally decided to get stuck for good.   But anyway run sea-foam in carb and gas tank a fuel times....I had to use a couple cans and some good soakings to get her unstuck.

goodluck.

Thanks Guys
I can see the fuel and it is in the middle of the window, so I assume that should be good. I did dump some seafoam in the gas tank and also dribbled some into the carb. WOW, talk about smoking up the garage. The kid next door had to come over to see if I needed help. HAHA. It seems to run better, although now the exhaust smells like seafoam. I'll run the rest of this tank and see how it goes. I still haven't found the mixture screw, but I'll keep looking.

I have 1 and 3/4 pipe, free flowing muffler, with no cat converter and it dumps out in front of the back tire. I think that I will extend it out the back like lilred suggested. But I have read about the mixture screw and that you have to uncover it or drive out a pin to get to it. Call me old fashion but I liked the old carbs that you could adjust. Or I read about putting a toyota carb on it. Anybody have any info on this?
Thanks
Bob
