drivers side cv half shaft.......easy or hard to replace?

drivers side cv half shaft.......easy or hard to replace?

Well it's time to replace my drivers side half shaft on my 94 tracker 8 valve.
Ive been told I can do this without removing the tire or even jacking up the vehicle, Is it that easy?

Any helpful hints or suggestions?

Yeah, it's simple.  Remove the three nuts and bolts on the axle flange.

Remove the lockout hub, and the circlip on the end of the axle

Pull the axle.. you might need to flex the suspension down to get it out..

Nope. no bearings!  the axle shaft fits into a sleeve and should slide right out.

Remember what quaddawg said about the circlip.  It will prevent you from pulling the axle out of the hub.   Just unbolt the lockout unit by removing the six bolts nearest to the wheel/rotor itself.  You don't have to remove the six bolts on the front of the lockout unit.

The job will be a lot easier if you do remove the wheel -- you'll have more room to see and work -- plus, flexing the suspension by jacking the truck up by the frame will make the extraction easier.

I put a jack under the control arm as I find I need to get it up a bit to pull the shaft easily.

You don't HAVE to take the outside plate off the hub to remove the hub, but I find it's a LOT easier to do so, as you can't get a socket on the hub bolts with the cap in place, at least I can't, maybe with a swivel you can.

If you take the lock-out cap off, make sure you have the hub in FREE, so you don't lose the order of the parts inside.. if it all comes apart, it can be a bitch to get back together if you have never done one.
