Samurai questions
« on: September 23, 2006, 09:17:55 AM »
I am starting to gather Tracker/sidekick parts for future use on 87 Sami. I have accsess to a 97 tracker (roll over) in salvage yard. So far I have gotten the 1.6l 16v motor 95k ran good. All pulleys with A/C compressor, ECM, wiring harness (dash/Under Hood), speedo, air cleaner, exhaust manufold, down pipe, etc.

What else should I grab off this donor and why?
rear third member?
Power steering Box? I got the pump/resivior.

any help ?

If you grab the rear axle, grab the front axle too so you have matched ring and pinions.  Note that you'll need to do some mods to the rear axle to get it to work on your Samurai.  The diff is physically bigger and is centered on the axle.  The suspension mounts are different, too.  An alternate idea is to find a second front differential with matching ring and pinion gears.  That way, you can rebuild your samurai third members with the TracKick ring and pinions. TracKick R&Ps come in 4.30 4.625 and 5.12 ratios depending on the donor TracKick's setup.  All are an improvement over the stock Samurai 3.72s in most cases

the power steering box would be a good thing to grab of you have the resevoir.  Also the pump, hoses and the mounting brackets (I imagine that you probably snagged the brackets...)

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. I will have to go look at what I got for sure I'm sure I got the pump and resivior. I will check on the hoses, I know I didnt get the box.

I guess you mean the the third member part of the F and R axles. The trany was an auto, the vehicle was a 4 door ( donor). My sami has for gearing a GrsII tansfer case and 4:57 R and P's spinning 31's. I bought the sami from some one that poured a ton of money into it so there are alot of extras. I want to beef up the front axle, go to a air locker front, mabey some more lift, repower.

correct me if im wrong, but i dont think you can put trackkick 3rd members in sammy axles. i think you will need the complete rear axle, but im not sure about the rear since its ifs.

Actually, you can IF you use two front third members and change the side gears on the third member that you install in the rear to match the Samurai's rear axle splines.

HOWEVER, it is a bad idea to do this if you do any kind of wheeling.  The aluminum housings are nowhere near tough enough to take the abuse.  It may be a cheap solution, but it'll leave you stranded on the trail with a broken third member if you don't drive with care (and what's the fun in that??!?)

That's why the best thing to do (in my opinion  ;D ) is to transplant just a matching set of TracKick FRONT ring and pinions into a set of Samurai third members.  The transplant will require a "can" - which holds the spider gear pins in place and occasionally a spacer to help align the ring gear to the pinion.

To clarify the rear axle useage issue, you CAN use the rear TracKick axle with the differential after modifying the differential position, the mounting points and the overall width of the axle.  However, you MUST ALSO use a front third member (or the ring and pinion gear out of same) with a MATCHING gear ratio in order for everything to work properly.
