Fuel Pump? Or something else?
« on: June 14, 2005, 12:50:22 PM »
Hey guys! Been a long time! The little Suzy has been running well this year and I've had no reason to post (only lurking :) ! But I'm back now to find some answers! I was at work and backed up and she stalled. To the best of my knowledge it looks like the fuel pump. I turn the ignition and do not hear the pump, the line is dry at the engine and nothin' is squirtin'. The only mystery to me is the smell in my cab... At first I thought something was burning, so I'm wondering if I might have fried some circuts or something that affects the pump? Any help or suggetion would be grand! Also, if it is the pump, is this a common thing? Any generic type electronic fuel pumps that I should look into (as i was quoted $375CAN for a new one)?

you should be able to 'hot wire' the pump to see if it runs or not.  will help narrow down things a bit.

That sounds like a good idea. How might one 'hot wire' a fuel pump? The minimal explosion method would be the best i suppose!  :P

thanks again guys

Just connect long wires from the battery to the pump and see if the pump runs...

u need a power wire and a ground wire run it straight ot yer battery from  the fuel pump, there should be some wires above the fuel pump that u can undo and put the new wires in

Check the fuel filter.......had the same prblem on my wifes 16v, same symptoms, the fuel pump has a automatic shut off as it hits max press...if the filters plugged (as mine was) it looks like a failed pump but it's not....also it's the cheapest fix

check behind the left rear taillight. there is a connector back there for the power to the pump and the ground. i had one in my shop a while back and the feed wire to the pump was full of corrosion and had broken off.

If it IS the pump you just might need a new motor. I hope it's easy to find fuel pump motors there. The price of the motor is just 1/10 the price of the whole pump assy...

Experienced a similar prob (without the smell in the cab) and I changed the motor and it's been working fine since. Also, all makes I think use a Mitsubishi fuel pump motor.

375 metric dollars huh? Did you check the web, that seems a bit steep.

With your mention of "a burning smell", I wonder if you smoked your fuel pump relay, under the dash?

Many thanks to all that have posted! I have some updates. Well, it's Friday evening after work and here is the run down:

1. Checked all hoses...ok
2. Checked fuel filter...ok
3. Removed fuel pump and tested....ok
4. 'half-assed' attempted at metering the relays...frustrating!!!!

I think you are right Bob, I think my relay is cooked... if only I knew which one it was under the dash, i could test it and/or change it!! Any help would be (again!) greatly appreciated! By the way, I still haven't fixed my bent up exhaust and I was wondering if maybe I cooked a wire from the battery to the pump somewhere along the way.... just a thought.... any more suggestions would be grand! I'm here in the shop for as long as it takes! I'll be checking the board regularily, so anyone is welcome to join in the troubleshooting! Thanks again!

I don't know about 4 doors, but on 2 doors the wiring harness that runs the fuel pump runs down the driver's side kick panel, through/along the rocker panel and up over the left rear wheel well. Then it goes from behind the left tail light into the tailgate sill for about a foot where it comes through a rubber grommet to the tank.

The fuel pump relay should be under the dash, in the vicinity of the fuse block and ECM. Mine was along the right side of the ecm bracket with the main relay...

Well guys, I'm pullin my hair out about this electrical mystery! I have been swapping relays, testing all sorts of harnesses and wires, ripping apart panels trying to trace my way back to the fuel pump relay(s). I feel like I've done everything!! I know the pump is fine and its not a pressure issue.... unless I need to hook up all my tank hoses to allow the pump to kick in? I hotwired it earlier and it pumped fuel through the first hose that attaches to the fuel filter. I have that hose off... do I need to hook up my tank again before trying to test the pump in the whole circuit? I'm losing my mind! That pump should turn on for a few seconds after I turn the key right??? ARGH!
