Valve Seals - 16v
« on: November 04, 2006, 04:09:05 PM »
My truck is puffing blue smoke at startup, and when taking off at lights, so I have to have my valve seals changed. Is $250 a good price(including seals) to pay someone to do this? I'm not sure what's involved with these engines, but the Suzuki dealer says it's a 7 hour job and the guy that's going to do it says about 4 hours....(4 hours x $50/hr, +50 for the seals, and valve cover gasket)
I'd tackle it myself, but don't really have the time or the proper tools.

That sounds good to me, there are 16 of them so ya it takes alot longer on the block, to have the head rebuilt is about 250.00 plus 100.00 for the head gasket but you would have to do the work to save any money! mine does the same thing but if I park the front tires on a set of ramps over night it won't smoke at startup!

valve seats arnt right, if there really bad, they gring and press new hardend steel seats in then re grind them to the right specs. if the seats are terribly bad they will just grind a few thousandths off of it. 250 sounds pretty good, my friend owns an engine shop and thats about the right price.

my 16 valve does the same thing. Blue smoke at startup.. I just assumed it was the seals and not the seats because the engine runs great. I also noticed if the truck idles for awhile it puffs a bit of blue when touching the gas pedal. Ironically, I noticed this on a smog test and it still passed...

Mine did it when I first bought it back in July or August, but it's seemed to have gotten worst just this past weekend,... I've been "enjoying" the 16v  :-X
I'm taking the truck to him in a week or so, I'll mention to him about the guides, but he probably already knows, he's been racing Samurai's and Sidekicks for years.
