What year did the trackicks have the 3 speed autos
« on: November 08, 2006, 11:55:19 AM »
Im looking at buying a auto trans for tracker, but the guy doesn't know if its a 3 peed or 4 speed. Plus he can't drive it because he got it wrecked. How can you tell which one you have?
It is out of a 2 door 90 8valve.

Thanks
TJ

I think all the 2 door autos were 3 speed.  At least up until 96 or so.  If its a four speed wouldn't it have 4 gear options on the shifter?

Thats what I thought too, the overdrive selector. so it is more than likely the 3 speed.....I hope.

the 1.6 8v has the 3speed and the 1.6 16v has the 4 speed
Another tip just so you check it out...
the 3speed doesnot have an oil drain plug...to change oil you have to remove the pan...the 4speed has an oil drain plug ; )

Owning both kinds of autos, I can tell you the definitive answer (or so I think...  ;D )

The 4 speed is identifiable by the contoured button under the drivers' side of the shifter handle.  Pressing it toggles the "Overdrive" or 4-speed mode.

If the you can turn the ignition on, you should see an amber "OD" lamp come on  or, after the ignition is on, when you press the OD button described above.

There may also be a rocker button on the center console to the right of the shifter labelled "Power" - at least there is one on my 4-door '93 Sidekick.  My 2-door '96 Tracker has none of the above.

Hope this helps!

Red's right, this isn't accurate, I have had 16 valves with both 3 and 4 speeds..

The 4 doors seemed to have more 4 speeds than the 2 doors.. As a matter of fact, I haven't seen a 2 door with a 4 speed yet.. but they still MIGHT exist.. not sure.

I bought an Auto from a junkyard and it turned out to be a 4 speed. the torque converter had 5 bolts instead of three and it had no vacuum shift modulator. It was also about 2 inches longer than the 3 speed. It did have the same bolt pattern bell housing to engine though. In short, it just wouldn't work.

Also to add to this, most of the 3 speeds, th180 and th180C and the 3L30, which are the same,  Had a metal plate rivited on the drivers side on the tranny housing stateing what it was.  Most all 2 doors were 3 sp as the one I have was in a 2dr tracker with the 1.6 16V. Now, 2wd and 4wd may be different in choices as well, that I don't know for sure.

;D  I had a '93 with the 3spd auto -- did really well until the tranny just gave up and died(about 105K).  I had it rebuilt by a local shop was never right after that......it leaked all the time.  He never could find the leak.....I took it back to him so much he called it "the Tracker from hell!"  Maybe it was the Mystic Magenta paint?!?!?!  I finally got rid of it and got my '95 Tracker w/5spd.
