What spline count

OK I need to know what the spline count is on a 94 tracker front/ rear. My dad has a 97 and I'm thinking of giving him my 3rd members. I will be installing 5.83s and need to know the spline count is and should I upgrade or what. Also has any body had any probs. w/ the old type rear axles the kind w/ the lugs pressed into the drums?

94 purple/green splash tracker w/ calmini 3' heavly modified lift 32 11.5 r15 bfg m/t's  & custom air induction and header w/ 2"exh. no cat lockrite rear 2" B/L and a heavy right foot and now 583s steel up front and locked.
2002 GV 2.5l 4.5 ZN lift locked on 31's

I think that the rears are 26 spline for all years.

Rears are 26 spline for all years

Fronts are 22 spline up until 96/97 when they went to the 26 spline front ends.

You definitly want the third members out of the 97 they are considerably stronger. It would be worth the time to swap the whole housing/3rd member and passenger side CV with your pops. 26 spline front end stuff is getting very rare..

In regards to the rear end axles I think most people here would agree that they are just plain weak no matter what year they are. Personally I would stay with the older axles (4bolt). Sooner later you will break one and the 4 bolt version is way more common in junk yards and on the trail! I twisted both rear axles off on the Rubicon and Steve Kramer just so happened to have a spare set.  (I was lucky) after that I carried a spare set everywhere.. If you pull the taillight assembly the 4 bolt axles will slide inbehind the lights in the body..

94 front is prob. 22 spline and 97 front is prob. 26 spline.

Thanks ;) I think that I will hold off with the front locker/axle swap to 26 spline until I can afford the hole g/v setup.

Yeah I went 26 spline at the same time I went to Anvil, ARB, 5.83, GV steel carrier.

i'm confused a bit.

i have an 89 Vitara, i know i have a 26 spline rear, its clear, but i also have 26 spline front as well. i haven't changed from the 22 to the 26, and i've only had my vitara for just over a year.

i know of other vitaras, one being a 91 and the other a 92, and they both had 22 splines. i'm not sure whether this is possible or if the previous owner(s) had converted. would Aus be the same as the US?

Everything is backwards in autralia.. just watch your toilet flush the water spins the opposite direction as it does on this half of the world!

I think somebody previously may have swapped to the later setup.

do you have a diesel or a v6 some auto and lwbs also run 26 on the earlier models as it was only the 1600cc motors that had 22 spline pre 1996/7

I have been looking into it as i need to upgrade my 1600cc

I pulled a steel housing with 26 spline axles Today from a LWB 2Lt Turbo Diesel, it was in a 5sp model with 4:3 R&Ps. This one had a inter-cooler mounted over the top of the motor and a Hood like Rihnomans one. There was another LWB Turbo diesel wreck non inter cooled model and this had a alloy diff but still with the 26 spline axles thou.

If your going to try find a steel housing look for one that has FW hubs on it and not the one that has an air actuated 3Rd for  engagement of the front diff, The air actuated one's axle is 9mm longer and won't work with your ARB and the RHS C/V is all so off set 9mm to allow for the engaging of the diff.
