catalytic converter question
« on: November 24, 2006, 06:58:10 PM »
Ok,  ive come to the conclusion why my sidekick is lagging power and surges while idleing and driving.  It is a plugged cat.
I called the local parts place here and they quoted me 245.00.
I think thats a little steep.  I'm just wondering if the Geo Tracker is the same thing as my 91 if so Im going to check out its cost, because I'm sure its alot cheaper.

Just have the muffler shop put on a aftermarket cat.   trail tough could sell you something that would work and would be there like the next day.

Hollow it out for free and reinstall. Maybe you can cut, clear and reweld? Save some coin.

be careful when telling someone that, that stuff inside of them is very toxic,(and a little radio active) wear a face mask and resperator and dispose of the dust in a plastic bag.

Yes it is a mess. Didn't know it was a little radioactive. Really? Huh! Was kind of a pain definitely. Gets you by in a pinch. Radioactive???

Contact Sean at www.aftermarket4x4.com , he may have a used one in good condition for a better price.

When you buy one specifically for tracker/sidekicks, they include the piece of pipe to the muffler, and flanges on each end as one piece, that may be why it's expensive. You could try to find just a converter, and weld it in to replace your, but I think Sean would be a better option, if you can wait for it to be shipped.

Radioactive???
I didn't know either, and I punched the core out of my civic last year, maybe that's why I turn green whenever I get angry....

(and a little radio active)

Please expound. Last I checked it was a Platinum (not plutonium) coated ceramic core in there. After many miles it IS toxic but radioactive, no.

thanks for the responses guys, but im not looking to weld or gut.  This is going to be a straight forward unbolt and bolt in a new one for me.
I just need to know if the tracker and sidekick are interchangable.

I believe they are identical. Just different name badges. Possible chevy may be higher because they "think" they're better.

Any time anything is around an explosion it gets radio active, the more it's around something the more radio active it becomes, like used motor oil, in Oregon you have to be certified to even take a used cat from a muffler shop to dispose of it, but if your on the internet don't take my word for it check it out.

I see them advertised on Ebay motors under parts and accessories under tracker.  I saw one listed new for that year for a good price.

I recently had to have mine welded by a local small muffler shop when the front flange broke and was corroded too much to re-use.  They said if they have to in the future they can cut out mine and install a cheaper one as long as it fits in the same space as the old.  It is a simple weld job for any muffler shop worth their salt.

Calmini's Hi-Flow Cat cost just $125, factor in shipping and install at a decent shop and its still probably not much over $245.
