Tracker is dead...well Half way still.....
« on: November 28, 2006, 08:25:40 PM »
Hello All,

I have not been on for a while,Moved to new house, new girl etc...LOL So I have put off the Tracker thought it was the fuel pump...So here goes.....

Specs 1990 Geo Tracker LSI,New motor less than 2,000 miles,lots of mods....33's locker,skids,custom bumpers,winch etc...

Went out to have fun,and it acted like it was running out of gas....but it had over 1/4 tank....spit and sputtered up hill almost a mile in the woods!!! drifted to bottom of hill called someone to bring me gas...still ran very crappy...would idle but would not go over 2-3000 rpm...So call TVT....LOL

Talked with TVT on the phone....It would run with gas dumped down the TB.No fuel pressure, put in new filter, checked it under the hood, pulled the line off at the filter, still no thing....Got sick of it and quit,Now it will not run at ALL!!!!!on it own with out gas in the TBI system......3 months later....Moved found new mud holes and trails......HUM,wonder whats wrong with the tracker???? Went and bought a new Multimeter and checked the voltage at the pump,NO volts,Checked the ground,it was good,Checked for voltage behind the tail light,no luck,Chased the harness under dash and quit looking......I had a 12 volt wire for radio ran to the back,Pulled the hot wire from the connector, slid the 12volt wire in could hear the pump running now,and it fired up after a few cranks... Sounds good just setting there revs up fine etc. Went on a test run....Runs ok down hill but back up...I thought I was going to be walking.I would not take fuel, spit and sputtered etc.

Would the ECM be bad??? Any Ideas??? Here's my take.....The ECM has went bad,no volts to the fuel system. Now that it has fuel pressure with the pump hot wired, there is no way for the ECM to regulate the pressure???? At least it sounds good....LOL

Thanks Tom K.

The Fuel pressure regulation is not regulated by the ECM. The ECU power and fuel pump power are controlled by two relays that should be next to the ECM. Check those, you should hear them click at switch on. It could be a bad ECM, but you should rule out the easy/cheap bitys first.

You probably heard this before, but when in doubt, try a known good ECM, the 90-93 ECM's fail at some point in their life. You could always pull the ECM and have a look inside - puffy, leaky capacitors, corrosion and even a strong, strange smell is what to check for.
Are you close to TVT? He must have one within his collection you could try.
