85 SJ413 (Can) vs 86 Samurai (US)
« on: November 30, 2006, 07:49:12 AM »
I apologize if some of these questions are really newb, but this is my first suzuki project.  I have a Canadian 1985 Suzuki SJ413 (prod. date 11/84).  I'm looking for a bit of info to figure what I'm going to do to my zuk.  Right now my plan is to run wrangler springs, toy axles w/o the rear offset, toy double cardon DS, and 33's

First question, are the front spring hangers outboarded from the frame on 86+ Samurai? Mine are right in line with the frame, giving me about 24.5" perch center to perch center. I read on pirate that sami's have a 28.25" between. So I doubt that the frames are different, but just need to know. if possible i'd love to see a pic of this on sami.

And do Sami's have a divorced Tcase, or a pinion mounted drum ebrake? My 413 does which suprised me when i looked underneath the first time.

Also if some one knows the distance between frame rails in the front, just so I can confirm mine is the same.

And anybody running toys without the rear offset, what are you using for a driveshaft. I've read that using an 85 and prior front toy shaft will work. any idea of lengths front or rear?

lastly if someone has seen a link or post about installing a wrangler leaf conversion - either rro JPEaters, or SKYs conversion, I'd like to know more about how these go in. Seems easy from the web, but that's always the case.

Anyways, thanks for any info, I know I'm asking a tonne of questions, I just haven't been able to come up with anything definate yet.

Thanks

Mike

Yep, you're in a spot there with the SJ. The spring perches are in a different location than the Samurai and the YJ conversion kits would not work without modification to your frame. I'll hold off on the other questions because this first one may change your plan. :)

From the gear guid section:

You can read about the Trail Tough YJ conversion and it has some fairly detailed suspension shots.

What do you think of this plan,

If i was to out board some samurai spring hangers to toyota perch width ~29.x" instead of the 28.25" sami width.  then add in a jeep conversion, (would it still work?).  This way i don't have to screw around with converting a toy axle to sami width. and could still use ubolts on both sides.

Or would i be better off figuring out where the jeep conversion places the spring hanger, then outboarding and moving a set of Wrangler hangers to this location.  Would probably require some frame extension i would imagine.

the rear will be no problem as i will just put new perches on the axle at the spacing that is on my SJ right now.

thoughts?

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. I think Sky may have some bracketry to do that (spring perches / shackle mounts at toyota width for Samurai, that is.)

but if i am already outboarding i may as well go the extra 3/8" on each side and avoid converting the toy axle to sami width.  Thus converting my sami perch width to toyota.

I think it will work, Just need to get a good look at the YJ conversion to see how this will be affected.  Think i should use sami hanger and conversion kit, or just put in a YJ hanger further front on the frame, or frame extension if necessary?

Those conversion plates are very nice, here's a great link to a build 4RnrRick and elotsip did on pirate,

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=493069

but like I said, may as well eliminate this step if I'm already outboarding, as long as it doesn't effect anything else.

thanks for you replies, it is great to bounce ideas off of someone.  All my pals (me incl. until this project) are toyota guys, so know zuk knowledge between us.

Sammys have the divorced tcase but have the ebrake in the rear drums. The transmission brake can be poor but makes a rear disc conversion much easier.

I used toy leaf springs all the way around and made new perches on the frame for them
when in doubt gas it!!
