another 1.6 8v-1.6 16v turbo question
« on: December 10, 2006, 05:59:33 PM »
Hi guys, ive got a 1.6 8v stock, and would like to install a turbo onto, ive got most everything rounded up(even made a turbo exhaust manifold for it) and i also have a 16v head with the pistons and all the wiring harness save for the ecu/afm, my question is can i just use the 16v intake(with multi injectors) or do i have to swap the head and everything? if the head and all do i have to swap the pistons or can i get away with just the head?
any help would be appreciated.

Its probably best to swap the head, the 16V ports have the additional cut out for the injectors. Maybe you could modify the 8V head but the 16V will give more power.  I know someone recently used a 16V head on an 8V block so you should be OK there, however if the pistons are the correct size it might be worth swapping them in. I would check the valve piston clearances and then use the pistons that would give the lower CR.

Got any pics of the manifold?

I've recently completed and am running a 16v turbo setup, and If you keep boost pressure down to 6psi or less you can use the stock 16v pistons without any problems. The 16v head is a much better design, and the MPI is better suited for turbo. You will need the 16v ecu though.

make sure you swap over everything including the 16v pistons, the 8v pistons have 2 cutouts, while the 16v pistons have 4 cutouts for the valves. 8v has 2 valves per cylinder, 16v is 4 per cylinder.

also, if your worried about piston strength, try using the honda D16 pistons. the weak part of the tracker motor is the hollow crank, but you can also use the honda D16 crank as well

thats cool to know, but i am el cheepo and do not want to rebuild the whole engine i was hoping i could getaway with just slapping the head on it, perhaps i will make an intake adapter and just use the mulitiport fuel injection running mega squirt.

if your on a tight budget just swap over everything thats 16v. the blocks are the same between the 8v and 16v.
