VW diesel repower... with auto tranny?
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:29:20 AM »
Has anyone achieved this?  Kick or toyota auto?  What is used for tranny control and detent?  3spd or OD (and which is which)?  Top speeds/rpms vs. tire sizes?  Streetable?  Curious....

I want to make this build so my wife can drive it, and due to disabilities beyond her control, the project needs to be an auto.   Can't figure out what each tranny uses for shift control.

thanks.

Acme Adapters has all the info and kits to replace your gas engine with a VW Diesel engine. Go to www.acmeadpters.com

X2.

I also believe that Acme builds an adapter for TracKicks so you'll be able to hook one up to an automatic and transplant the unit into either a Samurai (details by searching for a/t at Acks FAQ - link in sig) or a Trackick.

The three-speed can be identified by it's lack of a O/D button under the left side of the shifter if it is in the vehicle.  The four-speed with O/D can be identified by the extra wiring.  A visit to the local library for a peek at a Haynes or Chilton manual can also help you learn to tell a t-speed from a 4-speed.

BTW, everyone - Haynes has a new edition of the Samurai/Sidekick/Tracker manual out.  I haven't seen what's inside but it says that it covers '87 to '99, I believe.
