Glacier Trip In iceland.. GREAT DAY :D *VIDEOS!*
« on: December 18, 2006, 02:14:49 PM »
Well me and some guys went for a Great trip this sunday.

We woke up early becouse we had a long trip ahead. The plan was to make it to the top of "Long Glacier" (Langjökull in icelandic)

We met up with two other offroading machines in "Húsafell" wich is a sumerhouse/camping place close to Long Glacier.

Here´s My GV V6, Reynirs Toyota Hilux on 38inch and Gunnars Suzuki Jimny on 35inch

And up there we met up with another Toyota Hilux on 38inch tires with air locked front and rear diffs and a Toyota Land Cruiser on 44 inch tires also with air locked front and rear diffs and a crawling gear...

Well, here I am, starting to work my way up the glacier. And I´ve never been so proud of any car I have owned...The little Zuk flew up! Leaving the Big Boys behind with this look  :o  ??? :( :o

Here the Big Boys arrived..finally ;)

Thats me, further up the glacier..Pointing and laughing at the Big Boys ;)

Here´s a picture almost from the top..the weather wasnt on our side...heavy fog at times so I didnt get any pictures of the AMASING view up there.

The jimny had a little problem...the transfer case lost some bolts and came loose...

Here´s a picture of the HUGE Land Cruiser.. 44 inch tires, 4,2L Diesel, 3 inch exhaust, air locked front and rear, crawling gear..just about everything :)

Almost on the top...and the little dot is the Land Cruiser ;) Bigger isn´t always better ;) ;)

As we went higher the snow got heavy..and at that point the Land Cruiser started to lead the way and the Super Zuk had to use all tricks and power to keep up :)

We ran into a group of off roaders and they joined us.... They were all amased to see what the Zuk could do and how easy it was for it :)

And talking about being amased! This little F*cker just came from nowhere out of the fog! SUZUKI POWER!  8) 8) 8)

And here´s a picture at the roots of the glacier on the way home... Flat tire? No, We drove at 2 PSI to get the floating effect and more grip in all that snow :)

Hope you enjoyed :D

!!!**EDIT**!!!

Check these videos out!! From this great adventure :D

well, i know you're gonna say run em lower but...  i've never had mine under 15psi.  i daily drive'm at 30 and they're fairly comfortable.  if it's not slippery or rocky i lower to 25psi for putting around trails to make things a little smoother.   the narrow radials seem to start squatting pretty quickly.  i'll take a pic next time i lower them, since we have no snow up here yet that may be this weekend!

It's all about the squat...   if you get a nice soft wide footprint at 15psi, then that is what you need to run off road.

Just curious, what is the recommended tire pressure for a STOCK size tire on your rig? What does it say on the door sticker?   I would never run ANY tire over that pressure, for ride quality if anything else.. but it's all relative, like you say, with radials, you can't run them that low when your tire is small and narrow.

Foot print is what it is all about.  I started typing this before I really looked at your tire size, and exact model..

I used to be able to run 0 pressure, till the TSL's broke in, now I have to run 3-5 to get a good squat, anything less is a little too squatty... but on the road, i couldn't think of running anything over 20, and usually 15, but my tires are quite different from yours.

The huge tires these guys are running are about perfect on the snow at 2 psi, I was checking the vids and they look great, but then again, they are much larger and wider and they can do that.

i'm not sure off hand what the recommended pressure is.  i'll have a look and let you know.  i have about 7500km on the tires now and they feel quite a bit softer riding then when new.  they don't squat super low at 15 but perform quite well, with my rig being so new i try to avoid banging the bottom when possible so i feel like i'm still getting decent clearance this way. i know that i could go down to probably 10psi but just haven't done it.
in the video i have posted here called 'little video of the weekend run' i'm at street pressure as nobody aired down until after the 1st rock.. which is where the video ends.  the street pressure and wet rocks wasn't so great.
those guys are flying over the snow in the vids for sure, i'm not much of a snow wheeler myself, get stuck way too much!
