A-Arm Brace
« on: December 26, 2006, 10:57:56 PM »
Well I just got my lower a-arm brace built and installed on my Geo Tracker. I took a couple of pictures of it after I painted and installed it. This will add a little protection for the front diff as is but I will be soon adding a skidplate that will attach to the bottom of this brace and run back to the rear a-arm cross member. I'll post more pictures of it when I get that added.

This brace was cut on a laser and then bent to shape.  It is constructed out of 10 gauge or 1/8" sheet metal.  The bolt holes are also laser cut and lined up with out any trouble.

I can't wait until I have time to draw up what I want for the skid plate and then get it cut and bent up as well.

If any one has any interest in the brace please let me know.  The hard part is done and now the per piece price to get additional ones cut and bent has dropped quite a bit.  If I can get ten guys that want one for their rig I would place an order.

I expect that they would run $30.00 each plus a tad for shipping.  I like this price better than Calmini's and right now I don't see the need for a steering stabilizer.  I'm just running LT235's; later I might add a retrofit bracket for a steering stabilizer but not yet.

Let me know what you guys think.

Tyson, you are correct.  The brace is cut from one piece of steel and has two 90 degree bends in it to form the U shape.  Give me all of your shipping info and I can check on the cost to ship it up to you.

I think that if I place an order for at least 6 of these the price would only be a dollor or two more.  So far I have one friend here locally that wants one and possibly one for booger85 and TysonS.  That makes three; any one else interested?

That looks identical to Calmini's brace - what's the big deal?

Tyson,

I tried calling the post office today to get the rate to ship one of the braces to you but they were closed.  I'll give you a shout as soon as I get a shipping quote.  I might get a batch made up this coming week.  I'll keep in touch.

That looks identical to Calmini's brace - what's the big deal?

First off the following is an explaination and not a rant.  I understand how lifeless words in a forum can be construed to have any feeling that the reader wants to assign to them.  Here it goes.

I'm glad to hear that my brace looks like the Calmini item.  The difference is that mine currently does not have the tab for a steering stabilizer.  I'm thinking of making a retrofit bracket for it later on if anybody decides that they want a steering stabilizer.  I also need to find a good source for the stabilizer itself if that happens.

The reason I built this brace was so that I can have a place to mount a front skidplate.  I didn't like the fact ( ie. the price) that I had to buy Calmini's brace to run their skidplate.  I figured that I could have a similar brace manufactured for a lot less money and pass the savings on to others if they were interested in it as well.  So far I think I've done that.  If nobody is interested then so be it.

Now I need to design and have the skidplate manufactured.  Again I hope to offer any savings that I see from this project to any one that is interested.  If nobody is interested then I figure that I'll still end up with some killer protection at a better price than buying blue. ;D

Thanks guys!!

Mike

That is a good price, please let me know the shipping costs to Canada as well. Can you still use the stock bolts for mounting?

Hey guys thanks for the interest.

Jim, shoot me a PM with your address and I'll get you a shipping quote when I call the post office in the morning.

As far as the bolts go, I used the stock bolts.  I must also say that I have removed the front sway bar and its brackets so I might have an advantage there.  I'll look at things and if it looks like a longer bolt is needed with the sway bar in place I can make arrangements for that as well.

I'll keep in touch with you guys as I get closer to having them cut and bent up.

Mike

OK guys, it looks like I will probably have a half dozen built.  With any luck they will be done and ready to ship the start of next week.  These will be laser cut and bent from 10 gauge mild steel.   They will be unfinished so that you can paint or coat them how ever you would like.  If any one is serious about one then shoot me a PM and we'll work out the details.

Hope that every one has had a good year so far!!

Mike
