Utility LWB needs lifting...
« on: December 31, 2006, 04:06:15 AM »
heya guys... havent been on here in quite a while... just after i'd finished my liftin my old SJ i rolled it... so lost a bit of interest..

anyways, i'm just about to go and look at a LWB SJ413... but its a utility version, dont know if anyones familiar with these...

http://suzuki.off-road.com/suzuki/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=277666 third pic down...

ive been wanting to lift a LWB for months now, and i see this as a good one to lift... but i'm unsure if it will work.

do these utility ones have different chassis or suspension, or are then likely to be any major differences to normal LWB sj's...  i would ideally like to be able to buy bolt on parts, leafs, folding shackles, body lift. and then have someone do the welding for SPOA...

not sure what year this one is, but i have access to a set of 1995 sami axles, gearbox, transfer box etc... if thats any help

any comments appreciated

Andy

I know a little about these:

The suspension parts are interchangeable with other 413s and Samurais models, LWB versions have slightly longer rear springs but others have used SWB lift springs without problems. Pickup/Ute springs are uprated compared to normal LWB springs. SMJ springs have made 3" springs for Pickups in the past and will make them the correct length.
Sammy axles are wider and have different mountings for the springs, they can made to fit if the spring pads are relocated.
SJ413 diffs are a little lower geared than the Sammy diffs.

That looks like someone has modified a normal LWB. Its a Santana built model you tell from the styling and the diesel engine.. There are a few lifted pickups in the UK, I will try and find some photos.

cheers for the replies guys...

well, ive brought it... got it for £100... only done 35,000 miles since 1987... not too shabby :-)
thank god the parts are interchangeable... i didn't think they would make a completely different chassis just for 1 model... but wasn't 100% sure.

rhinoman, you mentioned that they have slightly longer springs on the back... if i just brought a set of calmini 3" lifted springs would these fit? as i was looking at doing the 5" shackle reverse, pluss 3 "body lift and the SPOA, or instead of the shackle reverse use folding shackles...

thanks again...

£100 was an absolute bargain. The pickups tend to fetch good prices because of their rarity. The challenge boys like them because they are a lwb and easy to tray back. I paid £370 for mine, a little tatty with overheating problems. I wasn't bothered about the engine as I was planning on fitting a Vit motor anyway. I then had to get it transported from N. Wales.
The chassis itself is different from the other lwb models but the running gear is pretty much the same, AFAIK only the rear springs and rear propshaft are different.
The Calmini springs should fit, the difference is only about 10mm IIRC, you might struggle a bit getting them on though. I would opt for the SMJ springs though, probably much cheaper too
3" body lift + 5" shackle reversal + SPOA = fall over
You shouldn't need a body lift with SPOA, what size tyres are you going to fit? I would go for the SPOA and leave it at that, maybe move the front axle forward an 1" to get some more clearance for big tyres

yeah... she'll be fairly top heavy... i was gonna fit samurai axles, then add some 32mm wheels spacers and get some super wide alloys from a vitara fat boy... i'll probs get 35s... but would love to get slightly bigger... (my freind has s defender on 35s... i just wanna be bigger then him)

its probably not gonna get used for large amounts of offroading... ive kinda driven over everything thats on my island, so its just gonna be something to cruise around in, onto the beach in the summer etc...  basically more of a PIMP wagon then competition offroader...

yeah, proper bargain... interior is tatty and needs a new fuel pump and battery... but will be putting a vitara motor in the second i get hold of one, and probs add a weber and calmini or janspeed manifold to get the power to move the tyres...

what does "SMJ" stand for? is that a make of springs? :-S

i have a set of 31s that i could put on it now, and just do SPOA... but i know i would get round to doing anything else to it... so its got to be done in 1 go me thinks...

cheers again...
