shaclke reverse + folding shackles...?
« on: January 03, 2007, 10:34:33 AM »
heya guys... i'm just starting a new project, its a 1987 LWB SJ413... and i'm just wondering... is it possible to fit folding shackles/sciscor shackles whilst also having shackle reverse?

i really want the extra flex that folding shackles offer, but also the smoother ride of shackle reverse....

Cheers

I know it has been done before, Teraflex was playing with the idea for jeeps that wanted the revolver shackles with a shackle reversal. I even think they made a set for a fellow sammy owner with a calmini setup. Having so much droop in that type of configuration would require an extra long slip yoke and a ujoint with extreme amount of operating angle.
I have seen a few of my buddies rigs with a regular shackle reversal and they work fine, and flex exceptionally well. Either the AAPA or the Wp warrior shackle reversal kits seem to work the best.

This is something I am about to look into. I'm not convinced about the argument for shackle reversal when used with stock springs. Stock springs are flat, therefore when the suspension compresses the spring will become shorter and the wheel will move backwards (I haven't tested this yet). So it would seem that with stock springs a shackle reversal would give a worse ride.
Another option is Rear Springs Up Front (RUF) this is often done using missing links (DFlex), it can also move the front axle forward a little to gain extra clearance for bigger tyres.

I contacted Rocky Road last week about this same question.  They told me it was a very bad idea.  they had done extensive testing with it and it was not feasable to do.

it doesnt sound like a good idea to me either, do one or the other but not both. also with leaf springs the axle is going to move backwards and forwards when flexing because the shackle alows it to if it didnt it wouldnt work.

Exactly, what I was referring to was the claim that on a stock Zuk the axle moves forward when you hit a bump. The claimed improvement in ride from the shackle reversal is supposed to be because the axle then moves backwards when you hit a bump.
If its not raining all weekend I will have a look at my 413 this w/e
