Opinon on Trail Tough Rear Bump for Kicks
« on: January 16, 2007, 09:36:15 AM »
Just as the title says.  I need a rear bumper becuase it took mine off entirely.  Need something strong to protect my rear.

I was looking at Trail Tough's rear bumper for the Kick.  Just wandering what everybody thinks the good the bad and suggestions.

I still haven't seen one first hand, only the photos.  They look alright, but it's a little too "tube-like" for me.

It is quite "tubelike" as CrikyMike says, but they are VERY tough, fit perfectly, and come with a built in 2" reciever for a trailer hitch. They offer better ground clearence, and a better departure angle than the stock tinfoil bumper, and don't collect mud like the stocker either. Th;e only drawback is if you have a body lift, there will be a gap between the bumper and the body, easily fixed. See mine at www.flickr.com/photos/bentparts

I was thinking of using some deck plate to fill in that gap.

I have a hitch on now and I use that as a place to hookup to and get pulled out, becuase it is secured right into the frame.  So would this bumper be tied in stronger enough to use as a point for being pulled out.

Any other suggestions for rear bumpers?

:) It bolts to the frame in four places on the bottom, and four on the top if I remember correctly. It is way strong, and you can pull on it all day.

I too have been considering the TT rear bumper. The only problem is the body lifted models.
Dont get me wrong the custom gap guards made out of the stock rear bumper fill in the gap.
But they defeat the whole purpose of buying a aftemarket bumper. Buy putting a TT rear or front bumper on a body lifted track/kick you will not decrease your approach or departure angles. They are strong and look good. But for me they will only be functinal if they are raised up to match the body lines. Me personaly, I am prob going to make my own tube bumpers that will function like I want.

Just my .02 cents

Actually, the purpose of replacing the stock bumper is not cosmetic, at least not in my case. The stock " bumper" is nothing more than stamped sheet steel covered in plastic wrap. It's barley able to withstand backing into a shopping cart without bending, not to mention backing into a tree or rock, or God forbid, getting rear ended. As for the clearence issue, I was able to drag the cover on my stock bumper cover on steep rock climbs.  Never touched the Trail Tough bumper, especially the corners which angle up and out of the way while still protecting the rear end.  Besides, Sheet bumpers, either plastic or steel, collect mud. Theres a reason you can see thru the tubes, water and mud flow out thru the gaps. 2 more cents.

Bent, I agree with you 100% about strong and funtional over looks. But where I wheel we need the best approach and depature angles possible. Im not doubting TT, I just like a bumper that fits as high and close to the body as possible.
Everyones wants and likes are different and how and where they live are different too.
I like the trail tough bumpers, they just wont work for me.

For a bumper to be as strong as possible, it should be mostly located equally between the frame rails both side to side, and up and down.  So when you do a body lift, the frame stays low, so the place where the bumper will mount the strongest is still lower.  One of the only good ways to get around this is to have the bumper actually appear taller to fill in that gap, since you can't easily have a bumper jacked up for a body lift, and reach down to the mounts a few inches, and be as strong.

I think if the upper tube on the bumper was made to sit up higher in relation to the lower one, then maybe that would solve the problem, or have a double tube on top of it.

I personally prefer "boxy" bumpers so you can step on them easily.
