Snow through an air vent?
« on: January 18, 2007, 09:31:30 AM »
OK...So normally I would pass off parking outside during a blizzard as no big deal.  I have my truck to pull out my wife's zuki if the snow is too deep.  And just let it warm up when it is cold...but this one even surprised the repair shop!.... :o ???

Just before Christmas, we got a pretty good blizzard.  Not much snow, only about 27 inches, but the wind was at about 40mph with 70mph gusts.  My wife parked her GV INTO the wind and the little bugger sat there for 3 days, through two days of the storm, and then one of sunny and temps about 35 degrees.  No biggie, on day 4, I went to move it to the other side of the house to the other driveway since it was plowed out.  Well it ran fine, and the next day, she took it into town. (We live out in the sticks....about 20 miles from a real "town").  Well she just made it into town, 1 day before Christmas, and it starts to run like crap.  Then it dies and won't start anymore.  >:(  Luckily she was in a parking lot and just parked it, called a tow truck and to the shop it goes.  Now I expected something like a bad cat that finally clogged.  Well then I thought, when I moved it, there was snow inside on the passenger floor board up front.  Well it turns out that she had left her air selector to "FRESH AIR" instead of "RECIRCULATE".  This is normal cause it defrosts the windshield faster with fresh air.  Well leaving it there, allowed for the wind to blow snow in through the air vents, and when the shop pulled her computer, it dumped out water!  :o It seems that the snow also got to her puter and just wasted it along with about 4 other sensors.  Well thank god the insurance company considered that "Storm Damage" so they cover all of the $2100 except for the $500 deductible.

Even the shop said this is the first time they have seen this and the guy that owns the place has been in businees there for 20+ years.  Anyone else ever see this? ???

I would not of expected this since I have always had full size trucks and the vent doors are controlled by vacuum so they close automatically when the engine shuts down.

I get snow blowing through the vents, too.  I actually even get full size leave blowing out of my vents sometimes.  A major fault in the GV design, in my opinion.  Came without a filter, too, so the car is covered with dust inside.

Yes.^ But the filter is after the fan so leaves and stuff could still get in the fan. If you cut a piece of screen material and place it under the air intake vent under the windshield wipers that should stop the leaves.

The snow probably pluged the drain where the fresh air comes in viola water and or snow in the truck.

that was really STUPID! like to put the dieselfilter on the diesel tube that goes back to the tank:P

somtimes i wonder if the car designers think at all!
