The right lift
« on: February 02, 2007, 03:16:04 PM »
Another guidance thread.

Once I get mu Samurai in, I'll want to lift it.  I'm wanting to get 31" wheels.  What would be the best lift that doesn't require steering correction, but allows clearance for the tires?  I have no clue what SPOA stands for.  Can anyone point me in the right direction for a suspinsion education?

SPOA stands for spring over axle. basically, a SPOA kit takes the leaf springs, and moves them to the top of the axle, to lift the vehicle. you usually get 5" of lift or more with just a SPOA kit on a sammy, which should be more than enough for 31" tires.

What about all of those nice new shocks and such?  Are those needed with a SPOA?

Thanks for clearing that up.  I fill like i'm getting smarter by the day. Just yesterday I learned what a locker was lol.

puresuzuki.com, breezeindustries.com, rocky-road.com and lowrangeoffroad.com are all places to buy kits to do a SPOA. conversion. I have a home brewed SPOA that gave me 4" and am running 30" tires, 31" tires would fit perfectly. You also may want to look at the 3" deever springs on rocky-road. 3" springs and well made shackles (ebay) would be nice if you do more road driving.

pm me if you have any questions

When you say 31's will fit perfectly, do you mean there will be no room for them to move up and down and such?  I see all of these pics with people with one wheel on a rock and the other on the ground.  Basically will it give it the off road look with off road function, or do you need a 10 inch lift or something like that?

Just about perfect, yes you will have room for articulation(up and down movement) but there is some trimming needed in the front bumper area. I think a spring over lift is great for a samurai.

yep. you'll have room for movement. If you're wanting to build it to work well on the trails I would recommend looking to get 4"-5" lift with drop link shackles, not to tall and lots of wheel travel. You will need to make corrections to your steering but its not hard.

SAS is solid axle swap, or straight axle swap.

Since you have a Samurai, you don't need to do a SAS, as you already have a solid front axle.  It is a modification usually performed on Trackers.  But a SAS Grand Vit would be kind of cool...  :)
