Help! Smoke screen and weakness!
« on: February 10, 2007, 06:59:10 AM »
Few!  Barely make it to work today!

The "not enought oil" light go on yesterday, so I add too pints of 5w30 and tadaaaa!  Huge smoke screen behind me as soon as the engine have to work a little hard.

Not only that but it also have misses while climbing and severe lack of power (I was thinking it will never make it to the top of the hill).

I already know I have a low pressure problem in one cylinder but it was never that severe.

And to top it all: The "not enought oil" signal is still on!  Especially when I push the brakes (just don't see the link here!)

Now I have serious anguish about going back home!   :'(

HELP!!!

There's a old saying in Quebec who said: "Grosse corvette, p'tite quequette!".  It means "Big cars are for those who have to compensate for a very small wiener".  Therefore, I love my VERY SMALL Zuki!!!

You need to perform a compression and leak down test, or have a qualified mechanic do it. Sounds like a ring seal or burn't or broken valve.

Drain that 5-30 crap out of it and replace it with something like a 15w-40 high mileage oil. The thicker oil can help seal things up if you are just barely on the edge of low ring seal or have a bad valve seal. The "high mileage" formulas usually contain chemicals that swell valve seals and gaskets to stop oil burning/leakage. You can also add a can of STP "Stop Smoke" or "engine restore." I know this stuff sounds bogus, but I have been a professional mechanic for a long time and it really does help prolong engine life in these situations.
In all my Samurais and my Tracker(and my Toyota 4Runner) I never used anything thinner than 10w-40...

is it possible that this could be caused by a bad valve cover gasket i found out that i was leaking oil pretty bad around there.  i also found out that my oil cap was the wrong size and wasnt holding a good seal.  Could this be my troubles?

well i think i found the problem.  Faulty oil light.  My oil light was still on after adding 2 or 3 quarts so after i changed the gaskets out i said screw it and changed my oil. Little did i know that every week when i was adding a quart to make the oil light go away i didnt really need to be adding oil.  When i drained it i had more than half a five gallon bucket of oil.  Im not positive this is my problem but i have heard of this kinda thing before...

The oil light indicates not enough pressure rather than not enough oil. You should be checking the oil level with the dipstick. If the light is coming on with sufficient oil then there are two possible reasons. A faulty switch/bad connection or a big mechanical problem. If it comes on a lot then you will soon need a new engine.
The smokescreen was caused by excessive crankcase pressure pushing oil into the intake throught he breather.

OMFG!!  ::)
There is no such thing as a "not enough oil light".  As mentioned, it is an oil pressure light.  You do not just add oil when the light comes on. ::)  One possible reason the light could be on, is the oil pump is getting worn enough that it will not keep the oil pressure up.  Also, low RPM (could happen when you press on the brake) can cause the engine to idle low enough that the oil pump will not be pumping enough oil to maintain the proper pressure, therefore the low oil pressure light will come on (or sometimes it flashes erradically).
Before you EVER add oil you should check it with the oil dipstick (that is what it is there for), to make sure the oil really is low and you need to add some.

Thanks all!!

Finally made the big move:  New engine installed.  1500$ outch! :'(

Actually, TWO cylinders where totally inactives!  The oil pressure goes out thru those.  That was the problem. >:(

BTW, I know than denser oil is prefereable for my museum-of-corrosion-on-wheels but I still have to use lighter oil because the low pressure and cold weather (i'm in Québec after all) make my oil turn into molasses whatever the density it have normally.

Only one regret: That smoke screen effect was kind of cool!  The guy behind me have to put his hazard lights on to avoid accident!  Of course it surely piss him off but since he was driving a JEEP, he deserve to suffer! >:D >:D >:D

Once again, thanks to everyone for your help! ;D
