Recall Question on 2000 Chevy Tracker
« on: February 16, 2007, 04:46:41 PM »
I just purchased a 00 Tracker after totaling my 91 Kick.  It is a Black 5spd 4dr model with 4x4 and only 68K lady driven miles.  I stole it for $4k even. 8)  I was wondering if there were any recalls on this year range of trackers?

Thanks

Jeff

I don't believe there are any.  I bought my 2000 4 door in '03 with 35,000 miles, now I'm up to 68,000 and so far all I've done is oil changes and a set of tires.  (215's on stock steel rims)  It is going to need an exhaust soon, but other than that no complaints.  Dave ;D

Thanks for the reply Dave.  I have only had mine for two days and I can already see a significant improvement over my 1991.

I actually just remembered that it had a very minor antifreeze leak at a pipe on the top, it was fixed under warrenty, just a gasket.   Both my '00 4 cyl and my wifes '01 XL-7 2.7 use a little oil, if it's half way down the ok line it is going to need a full quart.  The add line is actually 2 quarts low!!! ::) ::) ::)  Found that out the hard way when I first had it.  Always use 5-30 nothing thicker or else it'll stress out the timing chain tensioner.  Have fun with it!!!!  Dave

Thanks for the info Dave.  The oil was changed prior to me buying it.  The window reminder sticker says 10-40 Castrol.   I'll switch it to 5-30 on my next oil change.  Are you using syn or dino?  Not trying to start a oil thread but am considering switching the vehicle to syn.

I just use plain old Castrol 5-30 and I buy the Purolator Pure One oil filter, a good filter is important no matter what kind of oil you use.  Have fun, Dave ;D

I've also been using the plain castrol 5-30 in my 2.0

I tried mobil 1 full synthetic and found that it was burning off about 1.5 - 2 qts between oil changes so I switched back

Thanks for the info Frank.  I was seriously thinking about changing to syn oil on my next change.  How many miles do you have on your vehicle?  Do you think it is related to that?

Man after reading that, I'd have to say the reviewers didn't like my Tracker much.  I really like it, nothing wrong with a bouncy ride, I havn't had any problems with it.  Gas milage in my opinion i svery good.  And as far as power from my 4 cylinder it's fine.  I had an Isuzu Trooper with a 4 and a 5 speed before this, and it was SLOW couldn't really climb hills on the interstate, but yet it had this unstopable quality about it.  When I first bought this thing I said to my self,"This thing flys!!!"  It's got enough grunt to do what I need it to do.
As far as the oil, from what I've read it seems that synthetic has smaller molecules and therefore if you have a leak it will find the leaks easier.   Both my 2.0 and the 2.7 in our XL-7 use about 1 quart every 1500 miles give or take.  Although, we drove the XL-7 last Sept. from Jersey to Smugglers Notch Vt. drove it around up there for a week and then back home all in all it was about 1500 miles between the round trip and being up there.  It didn't lose a drop.
I learned with my Trooper that oil leaks, though messy will help preserve your undercarraige ;D ;D ;D

Opinions vary on exactly when, but it is a bad idea to change to synthetic in an "old" engine.  The reason is that the synth flushes out certain additives which have "swelled" the seals, which then shrink and start to leak.

When you ask "How old is old?" it gets a bit vague, but maybe after about 80,000 miles the seals have aged too much to support the change.

I did it on a Mazda V6 (so very similar to a GV V6 engine) which had done about 59,000 miles and it was fine - the engine hardly used oil at all, and didn't need topping up between annual changes, right up to 98,000 miles, when I sold it.

I've since done it on three Suzuki engines (all below 50,000 miles) and they hardly use oil.
'98 GV V6, '96 X-90 with RRO 2.5" lift and 195/80 R15, '93 Cappuccino.
