New member with questions which brand motor to swap
« on: February 28, 2007, 03:14:06 PM »
I am looking to do a swap bigger motor in my 87 samurai the stock 1.3. I have looked around to try and find a tracker to swap the motor out of but have not had any luck. Is their any other brand that would not take alot of fabing to put in? I have used the search and found some good info but nothing that really pertained to what I am looking for. I am not trying to spend an arm and a leg for the swap. Thanks for your help

A 1.6 from a tracker/sidekick is a pretty common conversion and works pretty good.

I have not had much luck finding a 1.6 out of a sidekick or tracker. Thats why I was wondering if any other brands would bolt up to the tranny and not be a whole lot of work.

Pretty much none.

The 1.6 8-valve and 16-valve G16 engine can also be found in some Suzuki and Geo cars mounted transversely.  Although there is a post somewhere detailing exactly which models have this engine, the location of this info escapes me right now.  Somebody know what cars had the G16??

I know that you have to inspect the 1.6 engines in some Geos as they are not Suzuki engines, so look carefully before buying what you think might be a G16 in a Geo car!

The closest you will get outside of a Suzuki 1.6 block (8 or 16-valve) is the Suzuki 1.8 and 2.0 engines.   Details on how to do those swaps can be found at

http://members.cox.net/aftermarket4x4/

I have not read these articles in a while but they may be done using the associated vehicle's transmission meaning that, although the transplant is fairly easy, it requires the use of the donor truck's transmission, too.

Because these engines are late models, you may have a tough time finding them too.

Lastly, you can transplant a VW Diesel... Oh wait, you said "on the Cheap"...  The VW Diesel may be a bit more expensive to swap, but the torque and the gas mileage is spectacular!

How about a Wankle? You can even find them with turbos. >:D Just takes some shade tree enginering to get it to work but you will have a screaming Zuki. ;D

Otherwise, keep looking for a 1.6. Anything else is going to cost some $$'s.

I was thinking about doing to Vw swap but they are even more expensive then the 1.6 swap. The reason I was asking what other vehicles was I was trying to find a car or something that had been wrecked to try and snatch the parts out of it. THat and the junk yards around here always ask what other brands and years of cars did that motor come in to try and cross reference it. Also what is a wrankle engine I did a quick metacrawler search on it and it didn't come back with much besides a rotary engine. I really appericate all the help you guys great site. THanks

The Wankle is the rotary. They can be found in most 70's Mazdas including the pick-ups. They have little bottom end but once you get the RPM's up they scream.

They are also fairly heavy. That might be a good application for mud or sand but, since you have to run high rpm's it will be harder to crawl through rocks.

if i was ever to convert another sammy motor , i think i'd do the diesel vdub motor. it is a bullit proof motor, little pricey, but the 16v is too
the objective is to try to not weigh the vehicle down with steel blocks and usless extra pistons. suzuki's are great cuz of there weight

I don't think there heavy. I helped a kid that shoped |removethispart|@ my store swap a 302 for in his rx-7 and he gave my the rotary, Picked it up and put it in the back of my truck all alone. butI didn,t weight it  :)

Might want to check this out:

If you're just looking for a cheap replacement out of a junk yard, the 1.3L's out of Geo's will work well, and have a lot of aftermarket support. I think they're called the G13?
