Do you have a 3 speed auto now? If so, I think the 4 speed is the same length. Mechanically speeking, it would be straightforward. But you need the wiring to go with the 4 speed and the computer too. Hope you got or want a 16v, cause that is the only way I know of it working.

Thanks, I heard that it might be a little longer. I was wondering if it had a lower 1st. gear?

   Thanks

A 3 speed will work without the computer, but the 4 speed i believe has electronic tourqe converter lock up. Someone correct me if i'm wrong. That is why the computer is required.

I don't know what the difference is in them cosmetically as far as the housing's go or if the dimensions of the transmission's are even different. i do know that the 4 speeds have a overdrive button on the shifter, so you could look for that I guess.

Heres the best way I know of to convert a 4speed auto to a 5 spd stick.

1.   Remove the soft top from the car

2.  Take off the radiator cap

(anyone know where this is going?)

3.  sell the car for a reasonable price

4.  Buy a new identical model in 5 spd stick for a good price.

5. Re-install the top

6.  Screw on the radiator cap

7. Auto to stick change out complete !

No problems making it fit or worrying about the computer!!!!

Well, that is the way I plan to do it when I get tired of my 4speed auto and want a stick!!!

Kevin

I've been wanting that extra gear or two for my Tracker too.

I was also under the impression that the 4-speed auto was longer (and only sold in 4-dr models).  I think if I go that route it will be with a donor engine/trans/computer from a later model.  I've never been able to get a clear answer on whether or not the drive shafts are the same length as on the 3-speed (if the dimensions of the two trannies were different, then unless the transfer case is different, I would think that the driveshafts would have to be different also.

All that complication has made me consider a 5-speed manual, but that requires a lot of conversion too  :-/

Please post any useful information you find.

I may be Major Dummy but isnt a drive shaft change out about the easiest part of the whole deal?

I still say sell the car and find one you like with the right trans set up.  I love my 98 4 speed auto but would gladly sell it if I could get an identical quality 98 5 speed stick.

PS any bites? 98 green tracker two door rag top.  Green and clean, no dents, no rust, shines, runs great, 2" lift, 235X15 ATs,  only asking $15000.00

Ok only joking. . . but Tracks and Kicks are like a dime a dozen here in central FLorida.  You can find what you want if patient. . .
