stinky exhaust

my kick stinks really bad of exhaust when its running. whether i have the top on, top off, windows up or down it just stinks. you can smell exhaust all the time and it makes me not want to drive it.

why is this? i dont have any exhaust leaks or holes in my floor lol. there is a new exhaust too (header back) BUT the only thing i can think of is that i dont have a cataytic converter. could this make it stink so bad? i mean i have other cars with no cat and they dont stink. why my kick?

You may have nailed it there.  Did you also, by any chance, also remove the O2 sensor, when you removed the cat?

is there a o2 sensor on the cat?

i do have a sensor on the manifold though. its a bosch, and from further reading posts im reading they arent so great

No, the O2 Sensor is on the exhaust manifold.  Bosch O2 sensors seem to work fine, to me!

That engine is designed to work with a cat.  I can't imagine why you had it removed.  But hey, you get the benefit of smelling all that unburned stuff, that the cat would have taken care of.

You might be facing multiple problems.  Is that a 1.6/8 valve, or a 1.3 in that 89 Kick?

  On one of mine, I run with no cat and I can't smell the exhaust.  Leads me to believe its something else causing your stink!!

i would check the thin metal gasket that goes between the collecter and the top of the header.  There are 3 bolts that hold it on and when i put on new exhaust that gasket on mine was rusted, so i took it out and ordered another one and it was soo stinky inside the cab just like you described.  And since you got new exhaust they shop might not have replaced that gasket making it leak.

I've got no cat too and no smell :S

I'm running a pretty much new calmini exhaust from manifold back. I did change all the gaskets though when i installed it.

for some reason im having trouble with that gasket on the manifold. they dont seem to fit fine. and the exhaust tip comes out about 8 inches to the right more (toward passenger)

By the way, the engine is not designed to run with a cat. The cat is designed/made to run with the engine. It's sole purpose is to eat the bad stuff out of the exhaust. As per the EPA and all of those other ghost's.

Any one ever smell a diesel engine with a cat? Smells just like an old clark forklift. (insert puke face smilie here)

By the way, I removed all that garbage off of my rig and the only reason I have a rich smell to the exhaust is the fact it is tuned for a 1.6l and is out of tune. That, and the fact it is on a worn out ol' 1.3l.
