I have always put in a 10W30 conventional oil in my 1.6L 16valve sidekick, but now I am about to put in a 5W30 synthetic blend oil. And i was wondering if that would be ok. thanx for your help

I went back to castrol 5w-30 regular oil with a wix filter, the valves are alot quieter, I think the guys making the syn, stuff are changing the base of there product, my rig and my wifes were burning the syn stuff(looked and smelled bad) lately so I swapped them both back to the cheaper stuff and all is well, the regular oil starts to break down at about 2500 miles so I change it at 3000.

It will thank you (especially in the cold weather u get) ...

Also don't freak if your oil pressure seems lower ... it's just the viscosity change.

REAL old/worn engines may prefer higher viscosity (bearing clearances increase with wear), but these small 4 high rev engines are so tight anyway, thin is best (thicker oil might mask the need for a rebuild, but ...)

Oh and as for the "change every 3K" ... I prefer hours as a meter (offroading has many hours, fewer miles). I do a twice a year on most of my vehicles (DD perhaps 3).

Just a data point ... my wifes car is now 2 years old has only 6K miles, but I've done the oil three times (and about due for another). Why so many you ask? Well, it is a turbo for one, but mainly it does many short trips and we live down a dusty road. So, even tho the miles are low, it has many hours. A DD sedan I had got 12K per year, and got changes every 6K (even then oil was "clean").

I thought the general thought on the 1.6's was that synthetic was better than conventional.  Anything changed?

ya, the oil. I almost burned up a v8 becouse mobile 1 did a bad batch with out the viscosity chemical,it made a long trip out of a normally short one. my wifes car ran syn for years no prob. same drive to work every week,then the oil started to burn(get dark smell bad)so we changed syn brand still burned,went back to castrol no prob. so you tell me why two different rigs driven by two diffrent people would all of a sudden have the oils life shorten so much?

I have always used 5W30 since I've owned my rig in late '93.  About two years ago I switched to Mobil1 and have found the following:

a.  Better lubrication
b.  Cooler operating temperature
c.  Quieter engine operation
d.  Excellent start up in sub-zero temperatures

And to ensure the best possible filtration, I use K&N oil filters as they are the best that I can buy in my area.

I change oil and filter every 5000 KMS myself.  In fact she is do for a change next weekend.  ;D

Actually, you have something with the clearances, thicker oil may do more damage than good if it's not able to penetrate those clearances. Stick with what the manufacturer recomends and change it often.

I use synthetic oil in all my vehicles,except my high mileage beater.
The Tracker gets 5w30 year round.
And i bought a case of O.E. Suzuki filters off ebay.
I use mobil1 4stroke 10/40 in my bikes.

I've always used 5w30 Valvoline All-Climate... a tradition passed on from my dad ;)
