Bouncing Needle
« on: March 19, 2007, 11:23:35 AM »
The needle on my MPH gauge bounces around when I am going under 45 mph.  It bounces within a 10 mph range.  Just wandering if this is an easy fix or not.

Sometimes you can just pull the spedo cable off and put some oil/grease on it.  Other times you need to replace the entire thing.

mine did that, then the needle on the cable end broke off..  :o

new one should be 42 bucks at a dealer, and takes about an hour to get it on (less if you know the cables route (not too hard to change)

Mine was doing the same thing, so i replaced the cable, and it did exactly the same thing, plus i was out 40 something bucks.  I'm calling my actual speedo gauge faulty, as the odometer is working perfectly.

Well I guess I will try to find a good used cable and try replacing it.  Do you have to take a bunch of things off or just the cluster.

I took the cluster out of mine and now I can't get my hands in there to reconnect the cable. I'm going to disconnect it from the gearbox end and push it through a bit. To rephrase that you might find it easier to disconnect it from the gearbox end first  ;D

I was able to change mine out by pulling the cluster part of the way out. I did not disconnect the tach, other guages, or the wiring to the idiot lights. It scratched my hands a little but was able to connect the new speedo cable.

I can't get my arm in the speaker hole hardly at all.. guess my arm is too fat..

I found it quite difficult to reach, if I did it again, I would definitely disconnect it at the tranny and pull the cluster with it still connected.. (I think...)
