Starting help
« on: June 19, 2005, 08:37:30 AM »
Well first time here.  Need some help bad ???

I just replaced the RAD on my wife's 95 sidekick.  She bought it about
2 weeks ago and the guy hat put some JB weld on it and it let go.  So
easy to fix , bought a new Rad and installed it.
Only two wires were connected to the rad mounts for some after market
fog lights the guy had installed.  I disconnected the battery and
replaced the Rad with out a problem.  That is until I tried to start
it again.  Turn the Key and the lights come on the fuel pump starts
put the engine does not turn over.  Not even a click.  So I search out
for electrical problems.  Went as far as takin gthe fog light out of
the system but still nothing.  There was a siren that was
disconnected.  I look for the alarm box and find a suzuki alarm box
with the main harness disconnected.  Just a 12V, Grnd, and one black
wire that heads to the LED on the dash and some white wires.  The box
itself is hanging by a small chunk of the original bracket.  Take it
down to take a look and it just started smoking.  Disconnected teh 12v
and grnd and the thing is pretty much toast.  Could this be my
problem, that the alarm needs to be in the system.  Even though the
harness was tied up in under the dash and not connected.

Also when I put a screwdriver over the leads of the starter it turns
but does not engage.
Any help would be great

If it's been sitting for a couple weeks or so, try tapping on the starter solinoid (cylender on top of the starter). Mine was stuck after sitting for a while and after tapping it, it started right up.

Thanks for your quick response ;D

It was running fine before I changed the Rad out.  And for the starter the strange thing is when I short the leads the starter spins but does not engage the fly wheel.

Ever heard of the alarm causing this kind of problem?
Just want to make sure it is not that

I might pull the starter out and run a bench test on it.

Again thanx for your help

Just a note to clarify, you need to connect
the little wire on the solenoid to the +Bat
side to enguage the starter gear into the
flywheel.  If this works, you have an ignition
kill alarm, and I don't know what to tell you
to get around that, remove it I guess if it's
possible

how is your battery?

also like what WILD said about the little wire. i used to use this as my immobiliser when i first got my vit, i just unplugged it from the starter.

also, the alarm you have migth have an immobiliser built in, or as wild said, an ignition kill option. now that you've fried the alarm module, you might have to take apart your dash and find out where the wires are, and over ride them, or connect them back up as they would be from factory.

do you get dash lights when key is in accessories?

after i got fed up with unplugging the little wire from the starter all the time, i hooked up a simple relay to the ignition as my immobiliser. i had to cut 2 main 12V wires for this to work properly. so maybe you might need to do some rewiring?

sorry couldn't help you.

Thanka again for your help

Would have replyed sooner just was too busy.  I went to take another shot at it on sunday and yes it was the alarm ::)

There is two wires that come into the alarm that cause the imobilizer.  Basically one from the ingnition and one that heads to the starter from what I can see.  Connect those two bad boys together and it started up like a charm.  Could not believe it was just that.

No to start working on the wife about getting some upgrades to the SideKik ;D
