Transfer Case Shakes Really Bad Need Suggestions!
« on: March 28, 2007, 10:38:59 PM »
i have a 90 samurai stock motor with a grsII transfer case with stock mounts.  the samurai has lockers front and rear. whenever im spinning the tires under a good load in 4X4 the transfer case shakes violenty.  t case shifter jerks back and forth and the smaller t case mount actually bangs against the bottom of the body of the samurai and sounds terrible!  ive tried the spider-trax heavy duty mount kit and it was worse.  the rubber mounts are fresh.  it has stock driveshafts and sits on 31 inch tires.  i dont know what is going on or what is wrong.  anyone experienced this?  all other mounts motor/tranny are perfect.

It sounds like your mount is broken or one of your rubber mounts are torn in half.  I would get the Bulletproof mounts from Rocky Road, since they are a solid bolt they won't rip apart like the rubber ones.

My SJ was doing the same thing when I tore the upper mount in twain.  It looked all right, but it was pretty much gone.  You are just putting to much torque on the stock mounts.

Your t-case mounting brackets are bent. It does not take much for them to be a bit bent and cause what you are describing. Sometimes people don't put in stronger mounts when they put in lower t-case gears and the mounts bend almost immediately. IMHO the heavy duty brackets should be sold with the gears as a kit. Anyway, the Spidertrax heavy duty mounts kit made it worse because there was even less give  vs. the stock rubber bushings. Get new brackets (Heavy duty - not stock) and you'll be fixed...

Assuming your input flange to the rear third member and your t-case flange are parallel AND you do not have too much axle wrap... Yes, everything will be fine. :)

...Also check to make sure that your driveshafts are assembled "In Phase".  There are dots on the driveshaft pieces that are used to properly line up the two pieces for reassembly.  There are a couple of links at Ack's FAQ describing proper driveshaft assembly. Find them by doing a search for driveshaft.  Probably not the total cause, but certainly a good way to destroy u-joints.

i think you nailed it.  i noticed the mounts on the frame are both bent up from torque and stress.  where can i get heavy duty mounts?  are they weld on?  i was just thinking of trying to fabricate something or have the stock ones bent down and reinforced.  axle wrap is something im looking into.  i have stock wrangler leafs on it and im still bending them on the rear.  what would you reccomend? thanks alot for the advice

Order a pair of 6 pack yj springs from trail tough, the main leaf is about three times thicker than the 5 packs, you just unbolt the small 6th leaf and toss it and your good to go and if you have a tall perch get a pair from t.t. also, theirs are just off of the tubes with just enough room for the alingment pins that will fix your problem.
