GV Spring lift for Trac/Kick
« on: December 22, 2004, 11:08:41 AM »
In an article posted lately an econo lift was proposed using Grand Vitara Springs and Econoline E150 rear shocks with a front strutmount blade flip. It read as following:

A good friend of mine and co-founder and coordinator of GONZOOKIN called me up and had a great idea.  Tim Walters, AKA Yankee Tim, had been doing some research and believed that using stock Grand Vitara springs on a Sidekick might lift it similar to the Old Man Emu springs. So after a few conversations and a quick drive up to Tim's house, we installed the springs. To say the least, the results were amazing. Using the Grand Vitara springs yielded a two inch lift measured and compared at the frame height.   An interesting side note we discovered is that the stock struts and shocks on the GV were identical so they would not help travel any.
For the rear, we used the rear shocks on a 92-02 Ford Econoline E150 van. These GV springs are 2 inches longer and have an additional 1.5 “ of travel.  To gain extra front travel, we flipped the strut blade to add an additional inch of length. The springs did cause the caster to be out so an alignment has been scheduled done to fix this.

I did this lift today and it worked pretty good however it should be noted that the springs I used, 1999 4X4 Grand Vitara 4dr, on the rear the top of the springs were too small to fit around the bump stop so they had to be heated and stretched.  Anyone interested in this lift should be informed of this note as some might not have access to an oxy-acetyline(sp?) torch. hope to have pics up soon, btw it took me the majority of the day with a hoist and a university automotive instructor. It isn't exactly a small job lol. not with the rust and seized bolts at least. Glad I could share for anyone interested in this lift. Did anyone else have this problem(spring's not seating properly) or can it be changed by using a different year GV? Mine are on now but it might be useful to anyone else looking at this lift as an alternative.

I tried this lift on my 1994 4dr 4wd and had no issues with the rear springs.  The front springs are about an inch taller with both springs out and free standing.  The rears look the same.  I would think this lift would best fit a 2dr 4wd Kick, as it seemed a little small on my 4dr.

I would gladly sell my GV front & rears for $60 + shipping if anyone needs a set.   whitfimb at Hotmail

You can get the same results using the springs from a new model Tracker with the 2 litre engine.  I used my springs after installing the OME lift on a friends 1997 Tracker.

The front springs measure side by side about 1 1/2" taller than the stock kicks. But you got to remember that the springs are not on the end of the control arm so there is a little math involved. I installed a set on the front of a 91 2 door Tracker. It measured at 2 7/8" lift, even after it settled on a rough washboarded road. For the rear it is best to use Jeep TJ front coils with one full wrap of the coil cut off(so you don't end up with the stinkbug stance) and then have the bottom of the coil pressed in to match the kick coil bucket on the axle housing and use mid 80's Ford Crown Victoria rear shocks. With minor trimming, you can fit 31s on your trackick.
