In an article posted lately an econo lift was proposed using Grand Vitara Springs and Econoline E150 rear shocks with a front strutmount blade flip. It read as following:
A good friend of mine and co-founder and coordinator of GONZOOKIN called me up and had a great idea. Tim Walters, AKA Yankee Tim, had been doing some research and believed that using stock Grand Vitara springs on a Sidekick might lift it similar to the Old Man Emu springs. So after a few conversations and a quick drive up to Tim's house, we installed the springs. To say the least, the results were amazing. Using the Grand Vitara springs yielded a two inch lift measured and compared at the frame height. An interesting side note we discovered is that the stock struts and shocks on the GV were identical so they would not help travel any.
For the rear, we used the rear shocks on a 92-02 Ford Econoline E150 van. These GV springs are 2 inches longer and have an additional 1.5 “ of travel. To gain extra front travel, we flipped the strut blade to add an additional inch of length. The springs did cause the caster to be out so an alignment has been scheduled done to fix this.
I did this lift today and it worked pretty good however it should be noted that the springs I used, 1999 4X4 Grand Vitara 4dr, on the rear the top of the springs were too small to fit around the bump stop so they had to be heated and stretched. Anyone interested in this lift should be informed of this note as some might not have access to an oxy-acetyline(sp?) torch. hope to have pics up soon, btw it took me the majority of the day with a hoist and a university automotive instructor. It isn't exactly a small job lol. not with the rust and seized bolts at least. Glad I could share for anyone interested in this lift. Did anyone else have this problem(spring's not seating properly) or can it be changed by using a different year GV? Mine are on now but it might be useful to anyone else looking at this lift as an alternative.
