she died 2 times?
« on: December 19, 2004, 04:57:26 PM »
ok what the heck. i FINALLY get her running great and im going down the road today delivering a pizza *my rig is delivery truck  ;D * and my throttle suddenly completely cuts out. i can't get the rpms up. i down shift and downshift again still nothing. finally it stalls on me and won't start again no matter what i do. i have 1/2 tank of gas and it's already 11 degrees out with a windchil of around -8. yes NEGATIVE 8! got down to -40 tonight and i met an alien in the woods but that's another story. anyways so i borrow my mom's car and finish my night and go back to her with a screw driver, can of either, and a 6 pack of 24oz mountain dew like any real mechanic. so i pull the air box/filter assembly off and spray ether into the intake and after a studder she starts and purs pretty decent. after a bit i park her in a lot nearby and my friend and i run to walmart. i grab some fuel/crank case cleaner *2 in 1* and some cold weather dry gas stuff. we get back and i dump in the dry gas stuff and fire it up and she's running decent. idles well for about 20 minutes and we decide i better get gas. so i drive it home no problems *about 5 minutes* and get my money and start to the gas station *another 5 minute drive* no sooner do i pull in the DAMN GAS STATION AND SHE DIES AGAIN! WTF!!!! so i put the crank and fuel line cleaner in this time and after having her crank with the starter for about 25 seconds it finally BARELY get's going again. i pull up and dump 94 octane in *which i never do* and then she ran fine. fired right up like a champ and ran good. still the acceleration seems a tad weak but no ideas. no engine light tripped. nothing. any ideas? anyone else experience this? maybe the bottom of my gas is frozen solid? lol help =\

Ice in the bottom of the tank, the
gas drier should help, buy quality
fuel, not just 94 but a good name
and see what happens

Ya know I have friends that use a lot of chems in the gas tank like dryers and injector cleaners and some times it does more harm than good if you use too much of it! some tanks have a liner in them, some filters have glue to hold the element in them(epoxy)some fuel lines and o rings, fuel regulators, ect get soft, swell up,come appart ect from the solvents in the cleaners, redline is the only one that I know of that uses a detergent that does not hurt anything.  you might have to replace your fuel filter and pull the fuel pump and clean the screen, pull the fuel reg. and back flush it, pull the injector and hit it with 12 volts and spray some carb cleaner throught it on the bench(becarefull with the spray)and do it in a warm garage to help get rid of the ice in the tank ect. for starters.also if you scrape the fuel nozzle on the flap under your cap you are putting aluminium(close)dust particles in your tank that will clog your fuel pump screen(thats a fun one to find) hope this helps.

ok well i replaced the fuel filter like 2 months ago. so i really don't think that's it. the fuel pump was my next guess but it clears up after i get a full tank so i think the bottom of my tank is just frozen =\ hopefully a tank or 2 of drygas will fix it up for good

The gas dryer does not thaw the ice it helps the water mix with the gas,if you have tiny particles floating around in the tank that will clog up your screen in the tank on your pump! your pump could be on the way out! drop your tank and look in there its free.

It's not that hard to do, about an hour job or so, just get a friend to help you with the lifting if you don't have access to a lot of tools, like floor jack, pliers, screw driver, drain pan, hammer, just take off you filler hose by turning it to break it loose after taking hose clamps off, drain tank if full, undo the two straps (skid plate)with a socket and rachet, holding tank up, lower it down a little, take off your vent line, return line, high pressure line, drop it out pulling the wire appart at the couplers by hand, when out turn the ring at the top or unscrew the top plate(would have to go look at mine)pull the pump out and see what is in there! you might be supprised at what the kiddies will do to pizza guys.olives ect.lol

If you have a 4" body lift, and have not raised the fuel
tank, you can get the fuel pump out without dropping
the tank, you won't be able to see much in the tank
tho, but you could check the pump and screen

In AK, I worked at a airport (avionics puller in HS). Water in fuel is a big problem when temps drop because ice floats, but liquid water doesn't. So even if you use a pcoc to drain the water from the bottom of a tank, as soon as the fuel gets warmed (or pressured), the ice will melt, and cough cough. Not good when your flying :)

bioniconion, my guess is you have water in your fuel (as ice until warmed/presurized). When you stop long enuf, it refreezes, so your drawing only fuel (the ice floats), but when the ice melts, you draw water.

The "fuel dry" stuff won't help when the water is solid  (aka ice), but eventually you might get it cleared ...

Your probably going to have to drain the tank (and best if you can get it "warm" so as to also purge the ice). Be careful how you "warm" the tank! Well ventilated, cap off, etc ...

Just my guess, but really does sound like ice in fuel.

Did you run the computer diagnostics, yet? One of your sensors may be on the fritz. (Toolman found his probs that way, last week in the chain "Power Loss".)

hmmm

I'm actually thinkning the pressure thing works the other way ... water at atomsphere may be liquid, but presurized it goes to ice (and your tracker tank does build a pressure) ... my physics learning is just escaping me today :/

I do know that ice floats in fuel and water doesn't :)

I'm starting to wonder if the pressure if freezing water in your lines or somethin ... (clogs it up, but then goes liquid so it'll start and run for while, then ...)
