95 sidekick engine troubles
« on: April 15, 2007, 07:04:24 PM »
I own 95 sidekick 2dr 4x4 5sp with 16V engine.  It's my daily driver to work.  I've owned it for 3 years it has 105,650 miles on it.    It ran perfect on the way home from work like always.  The next morning it ran poorly.  I had to go back home and get the pickup.  It runs but it smokes white and when you rev it up it has blue smoke added in with it.  Coolant started to go down, oil went up and it's eating fuel.  I pulled the plugs and 1 and 2 are normal.  3 had motor oil on it and 4 was a dry black thin soot.  Headgasket? or bad valves?  I work on farm tractors so this is new to me.  I do have a service book for it.

Yep...head gasket for sure.  Water leaking into your oil and white smoke steaming out the exhaust pipe...burning water oil and fuel when reving it up. If you dont have white foam in radiator yet...you will soon. You can just replace the head gasket (cheapest way to go) and drive it some more miles or just rebuild the motor, usually about $1200, parts and labor, at a good automotive machine shop. If you can pull and reinstall the motor yourself you can save 1/2 the total bill for a garage to do it, about $2500. New motor means many more miles and money well spent.

                                                 Hope this helps...

Or you can get an Attarco motor for it($600-$800) thats what I did on mine. They usually have about 50,000 or so miles on them.
Runnin' it stock with 225/75R15s and an unmodified 8valve TBI motor (I need a doug thoroley header and a cam) (more power) (1.6 liters of madness) (vroom + sewing machine sounds)

I agree your headgasket does sound in need of replacing.  I would wrench it out for a lot less than it would charge.
