And lasts a whopping 50k miles before major work is needed and have no low-end torque ;D

ya they dont last, ive heard 120k kms... might equal about the same in miles.

torque is a concern :P, but im sure its got a good amount in the high revs, and if all stu does is mud, it would work out perfect.  i wouldnt want one for crawling, i'd want a diesel for that

ive seen a few rx7s with no mods spin the tires and could keep going forever, i think that would be perfect for mud... what do i know, i hate mud, i like to crawl

About the only part you will be getting a turbocharger,
and an intercooler, turbo is from a Subaru 1.8 or a Mazda
mx3 Turbo 1.6, intercooler is from a Volvo, tho one from
any other turbo vehicle could be made to work.

You will want to add a MegaSquirt EFI fuel computer
for the added fuel needed under boost www.msefi.com
and lots of fabrication, there is no simple bolt on turbo
setup for the SideKick.

Hey Wild, how much would you charge to make another turbo manifold like that?

Also, what sort of wiring is involved in adding the megasquirt? Do you wire it into the existing computer, or is it a standalone thing?

i would not want to " crawl  " anywayz . i did enough of that as a baby . LOL I understand your point , i just wasnt looking at the below 2k rpm range . diesels make a ton of low end torque but without a turbo wont get out of there own way . i still say TURBO! boost determins how long the engine will last . low boost will run as long as NA . extremely high boost and it might not make it back home but will be BAD A** for a few minutes .

Manifold is about $400 without ceramic coating
ceramic is $100  :o

MegaSquirt is a standalone system, wiring is thru
a DB37 connector, which sort of looks like a printer
port on the back of a computer, it also needs a laptop
to plug in and tune the system, but only for tuning,
not to opperate.

The MS has wires for the injectors, air temp, coolant
temp, TPS which is not compatable on the 8V engine,
I don't use the TPS yet, but I will get it hooked up
sometime, I'm going to use a Ford TPS that is compatable
with the MS, but I need to put in a Throttle Body spacer first.  Then you need injector ports welded to the intake
manifold and a set of injectors, about 19-25 PPH work
fine if you use the stock injection system as well.

Sounds scarily overcomplicated... I'd do an engine swap, but I LOVE having an engine that I can pick up by myself :P

Gears, Gears give er the gears and a few engine mods. That's my suggestion if its just the tire size. But if your after raw power don't know. I'll bet someone makes a turbo for that will go on the 1.6.

Gears will help correct the bigger tires,
but you will never get the same power
as you had with the stock tires and gears,
there are just too many additional drags
added with big tires.

My over the winter power mods will include:

Putting back on my gutted exhaust manifolds(pre-cats)
Re-doing my exhaust system 2.5" all the way back.
Installing OBD2 oxygen sensor simulators(2)
Experimenting with intial timing settings
Check into having the ECU reprogramed

Many other projects not power related"

Install cruise control
Make my hardtop fit better
Different motor mounts
Rear brake upgrade
