removable doors?
« on: December 18, 2004, 03:23:43 PM »
It seems that a lot of people with Samurai run without doors, and most track-kicks run with doors.

Has anyone come up with a good removable door setup for the track-kick, or are the doors just too heavy to do it?

I'd love to get a more open feel on the trail, but unbolting the doors or popping the hinge pins seems like a real pain to have to do each time.

im wondering this too. obviously we have to relocate our mirrors so westill have them. im thinking of putting like drop pins in door hinges so they are easy to remove...anyone take thier track doors off and able to put htem on easy? my only other option is to put like heep hinges on the outside of my doors. =\

Saw a tracker with the doors off on a readers rides photo site at truck world.  It looked very good.  I wrote the guy an email and he reported that the doors come off easily.  He used some pins to replace the door hinge bolts that did the trick.  He reports that it worked fine.  Said he is very pleased with the set up and uses the doors off for rough trial rides, doors on for daily driving.

Yeah I need to get your rig into the shop to get the protos made. I have never worked much on kick/tracks so we will need to research the possibilities but I know we can come up with something cool.

You can see what my Sammy doors look like in the Calico thread.( don't know how to get  pics here but I will work on it)

Thanks

these are the first attempt at a tube sammy door on my beater. they have come a ways since these but look similar. the latest version looks like this but with a different down tube.

I am working on a more simple latch set that will be universal. I can do YJs and CJ-7s too.
Don't mean to advertise but if you want some pm me or e-mail wayne|removethispart|@bruinpainting.com

can't we just make it simple? no way to just take the hinge pin out and drop a nail in there or something?  ???  how difficult are we talking?

I pulled the pins and ground off the knerling that helps hold them into place.

The come out good now.  The knerling part helps hold the pin the the steel part so that the pin with rotate in the bushing part.

So, the pins could now be rubbing steel on steel.  I just keep them lubed up.

Hi Wayne  :)  the nice part about Track/Kick
hinges is that they are a total bolt on part,
they bolt to the body and to the door, so a
hinge could be removed very easily, modified
and replaced, or even exchanged for a modified
hinge to use with tube doors or no doors  ;D

Hey wild :) I know you have something in mind and I have a tracker comming over tonight for a little work so I'll see what I can come up with. Question, are the 2wd and 4wd two doors the same? the one coming over is 2wd. I like the post about the removable pin. I don't worry much about wear. Sammys are steel to steel and mine have gone a long time with no probs. If there is a bushing prob all the chain stores sell door hinge rebuild kitts that would work with a little mod. I was thinking of maybe turning a couple custom pins and see if I could buid the bushing right in.

If you have never wheeled without doors then you don't know what you are missing it improves vis and you get a more out there feel. the tube doors provide the same but you or your kids can't stick their leg out in a roll.

Thanks
Wayne
