5.12 to 5.38s
« on: April 25, 2007, 08:46:17 AM »
On my tracker i went from stock to 31s to 31 swampers and currently i have 30s but i want to go back to 31s cause it looks better. but my question is if i go from 5.12s to 5.38s am i really going to notice much of a difference. It is a DD so i need a little more high range for highway driving and for weekend wheelin i need some low range reduction. i have thought of going to a 2wd trans and getting a sami t-case but its a little out of my budget and even after that swap i am going to have to put 4-1 t-case gears in it for any gain from the swap. So how much of a gain will i get from going from 5.12s to 5.38s i know it can't be that much but does anybody run this?

Well this is how it breaks down by the numbers.

The 31" tires are 14% taller than the stock 27" tires that the tracker came with.  The 5.38:1 gears are 5% lower than the 5.12:1 gears that the tracker has in it.

So the over all affect of using the 31" tires and the 5.38:1 gears would be like running a tire that is only 9% larger or about 29.5" tall.

Of course this is all by the numbers and real world "feel" might be different.  I say go for it though.

Thanks for the info i was never good with numbers, but with the 30s that i have now i like the power that i got back so if i would do that it would still be pretty good. so i proly will. Does anybody know were i can get the 5.38s for the rear? I know for the front i can get some for a sami but the rear is much bigger.
