electrical short issue
« on: May 05, 2007, 12:28:49 PM »
I have read through the search about more than  a few people having electrical shorts in their
system. Im having one where the power drain is pretty bad  my alt will almost want to seize and im forced to turn my lights off for a min to let the alt catch again at idle. I have swapped the harness behind the dash and didn't help at all. What are some of the solutions people have discovered in this mess...this is probably the most annoying problem I have yet to encounter !|removethispart|@ >:(

Are you running "extras," like aux. lights, sterio amplifier, subs, etc.? If so, you may want to look into a GM alternator conversion...

Thats a pretty big short. I would have thought that in most cases that would have burnt something out. Could it possibly be a faulty battery?

have you tested the charging system yet? when you say that it is at idle it wants to stall if you have any lights or heater on? if you are going thru batteries so fast the alternator could be over charging. check for charging voltage at the battery with the truck running and all accessories off. anything over 14.6 volts means that the alternator is over charging and that will cook the battery.

i have just replaced the alternator and it tested good what i noticed is if i run the car with no batter hooked up its fine now belt whining nothing the min a hook it up its ok but it will start whining the belt pretty hard when the lights are on and i get to a complete stop. I think something is shorting to the block somewhere... jees what a pain in the ass !.
