Oil pan leaks on a 99 gv w/a 2.5
« on: May 06, 2007, 02:04:09 PM »
I have a 99 gv w/a 2.5 V6 and I have a leak at the oil pan in the rear. I've already pulled it down and coated it with rtv and reinstalled and it still leaked. I've pulled it back off and cleaned it up... again. Any advise out there? The dealer said to use rtv should I use something else? I really don't want to have to pull it back apart...again.  By the way it shouldn't be the rear main seal...right? The dealer told me that they rarely go bad.    Mark from Tampa

It could easily be the rear main seal. In fact, there is TSB out there from Suzuki relating to early failure and an improved seal availability if my memory serves me well.

On the oil pan...did you let the RTV set up for a period of time prior to re-assembly? This is a recommended approach for this type of fix.

There is a leak dye that you add to the oil and use a UV light to locate leak origins. GM dealers sell it as does NAPA. Should help in finding the leak.

How many miles on the 2.5?

The 2.5 is known for the front timing chain cover gaskets leaking, particularly on the front LEFT corner. Any chance that the leak originates there?

I guess they(dealership) happened to not tell me about letting the rtv setup before assembly. That probably would have been nice to know. I mean it sat up for about ten minutes from the bench to the engine. I reassembled it again yesterday and put oil in it this morning and it still leaks. Oh and the rest of the pan is dry...it just comes out the back. It's my buddies truck and I told him I give up. I did the job twice and yall know it isn't fun. Thanks anyways
