sj410 axle questions
« on: December 09, 2004, 03:40:38 PM »
hellllo
just bought my 3rd zuk a month ago, 4th including a sprint i had...
its a 1984 sj410 lwb
some concerns about the axles, how much weaker would you say they are than sami axles, cause i thought sami axles were extremely weak in the first place... then i hear about sj410 guys swapping to them

also, ive heard you cant swap toy axles onto one without a lot more work... is that cause the springs are inboarded and you'll destroy the bushings very fast?

one more thing ;D.. would 4.62s, 5.13s or any common gear fit them, i havent even heard of kits on the net for sj's (wouldnt want one really anyway cause this is a B-U-D-G-E-T project)

i have noticed the d/shaft, atleast the front one, seems about as thick as a broom stick, although the 40hp probably couldnt hurt one too bad

any input at all on sj's even non-axle related would be awesome

thanks, Andrew

People swap the sami axles in so they can swap gears and add locker. Nobody makes lockers for the 410. I thought the rears were only 22 spline also. If your on a budget do the sami axle swap... or the toy swap should also work good too.

If you do not swap the engine, the axle are strong enough. There are a few differential upgrade available. I had been able to source 4.8, 5.12 and 5.3 . 4.8 are from LJ80 and the other ratio are from Jimny 660turbo. I still have a few 4.8 in my garage.

yeah the axles and diff (4.10's) are much smaller  and weaker and will not fit sammi drivetrain parts.

there shouldn't be any problem using toy axles on the narrower frame, if anything it'll prolly be better for flex and your tires won't be rubbing on the leaves when you turn full tilt, depending on your tire size

the t'case in your truck is worth keeping tho!

Sheesh, a guy takes a weekend off to go play in the snow... ;D

It's worth it to swap over to the Sammi Axels for the reasons mentioned above, if you want to run lockers you need the newer diffs.  I would pick up some Sammy axles and new transfer case gears.  A word of caution though, you supposedly need a Sammy transfer case to swap the gears into.  Not sure what the difference is, but I didn't feel like pulling mine apart to make sure it wouldn't work and just replaced the case and kept my old one as a spare.

Strength really isn't an issue though, as your only running 45 HP out of that engine.  Stats can be found here comparing the various older Suzuki 4x4's.   The previous owner of my SJ used to mud bog with 29" Buckshot Mudders and never broke anything.

When I put the Hybrid Rear from Hawk Suzuki in the rear of my Sj I had to grind down one side of the new pads as it started to ride up on the side of the pumpkin.  The joys of having your springs 3" closer together.  You might have a similar problem with the Toy axels, but nothing to hard to fix.

I love my SJ410.  How many people can say they did Upper Helldarado with a 1.0L engine?

for the tranfer case you can either run it in it's stock form(baby lobster) or splice one of the gears from the baby lobster to one of the sammi case gears and then you got yourself a rocklobster or 4.16:1 case

lower gear reduction for better crawlability.

;D thanks for the great responses
im very happy that toy axles could be swapped if i ever decided to
ill have to see if the 45hp bothers me, or the weak axles first... ive become interested in the 1.3 16valve swift motor swap, cause then i could also get a 5spd trans... i drive a swift with one at work and it has tons of power
it'll be a fun project seeing i have another car to get me around in
