Side draft
« on: May 14, 2007, 08:43:32 AM »
I was thinking about going with a side draft carb set up.  I have an 88 sammi.
I was woundering if anyone has ever run a side draft or know anyone that has run them.  Are there any cons to this carb set up?  I have heard some people say that they can be pretty boggy as low speeds due to the intake not being able to pull the fuel in at lower RRMs.  But i have also heard that they have very snappy throttle response.

Any information would be great.

Thanks

I can do the side draft carb for about 350 bucks.

But and engine swap has been in the back of my mind for a while, i will most likely do an engine swap later on but for now im going stick with the mighty 1.3L

I have a side draft on my SJ-410 and I love it.  You don't stall out while climbing like the traditional carb setups.  :)

Not sure about issues, but one of the guys I used to wheel with used a side draft on a Toyota that has a nasty habit of causing the head to burn valves up unless it was tuned just right.  He ended up switch to injection after a year or so.

Which carb are you considering? The SU carb swap is very popular in the UK usually using a 90 degree adapter. The adapters do suffer from carb icing in the winter though so a properly converted manifold is a better option. If the carb is set up right it doesn't matter whether its sidedraught or downdraught, the fuel still has to be pulled up from the float chamber.

I've run'em and I like them. There are things to do for set up but once they're dialed in, they are great and the webers are rock solid; no further adjustments needed.
